AUSTIN, Texas - Adam Knollmeyer (Linn, Mo./Linn) picked the most opportune time to sink the two biggest free throws in his career at Missouri S&T.
Knollmeyer, a junior forward who joined the team this season after a two-year stint at Saint Louis University, knocked down two free throws with 2.3 seconds left on the clock to give the Miners a 69-68 victory at St. Edward's Tuesday afternoon.
The Miners needed Knollmeyer's heroics after the Hilltoppers overcame a four-point Miner lead with just over two minutes to play.
Aaron Hays (Kirksville, Mo./Kirksville) hit a pair at the line with 2:10 left to put S&T up 67-63, but SEU was able to overcome that deficit and took the lead on Taylor Mullenax's basket with 27 seconds remaining.
S&T went to Knollmeyer in the waning seconds and he drew a foul from St. Edward's guard Taylor Land with 2.3 seconds to go. After a pair of timeouts, Knollmeyer - who came into the game shooting only 53 percent at the line - hit both shots at the line to give the lead back to the Miners.
St. Edward's last attempt ended in a turnover as
Owain Hall (Kingston, Jamica/) picked off a long pass and dribbled out the clock to allow the Miners to even their record at 5-5.
The Miners fell behind by as many as 12 points in the first half, but closed the opening period by outscoring the Hilltoppers 16-6. Marquis Jones' three-pointer with 26 seconds to go in the half cut the lead to two at 31-29 as the teams went to the locker room.
S&T came out hot to start the second half and got its first lead since the early stages of the contest when
Justin Taylor (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) drilled a three-pointer at the 18:03 mark to put the Miners up 37-35. The Miners held the lead for the next five minutes, but didn't fall behind again until Tyler Carr's dunk with 11:14 left put SEU up 46-45.
Taurance Townsel's two free throws 23 seconds later put the Miners back in front, but St. Edward's regained the lead with 8:34 left on a lay-in by Jannik Zimmer.
Moments later, Taylor - who had already scored 21 points in the game - was whistled for a turnover and then was assessed two technical fouls when the two teams began pushing and shoving. Zimmer made four straight free throws and Mullenax hit a layup to extend the Hilltopper lead to seven at 56-49.
But the Miners were able to get right back in the game as
Aaron Redecker (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) converted a conventional three-point play to drop the margin to four. About three minutes later, Jones got a three-point play of his own to bring the Miners to within one, then canned a jumper on the Miners' next trip down the floor to give S&T the lead back at 63-62.
The Miners shot 52 percent in the second half and 48.1 percent in the game as they were able to overcome 23 turnovers. S&T also outrebounded the Hilltoppers - who shot 49 percent in the game -- by a 37-20 margin.
Taylor led all scorers with 21 points while Jones matched his career high that he set in Monday's loss to Texas A&M-Commerce with 17. The victory also ended the Miners' 23-game road losing streak dating back to Nov. 25, 2006 when S&T won at Lincoln.
