Missouri S&T appeared ready to secure its first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season Saturday -- but wasn't able to throw the knockout blow as Drury escaped with a
91-84 double overtime win at Billy Key Court.
The Miners had a seven-point lead with 2:46 to play in regulation time, but the Panthers overcame the deficit and forced overtime on Tim Brown's three-pointer with a minute to play. Then in the first overtime period, Drury extended the game on Kyle Vaughan's three at the buzzer and went on to outscore the Miners 13-6 in the second extra period.
Missouri S&T trailed by seven at halftime and by 10 early in the second half, but used a 13-1 run to overtake the Panthers by the 14:20 mark of the second half.
DeJon Slaughter (Kansas City, Kan./Sumner Academy)'s tip-in of a missed three-pointer by
Justin Taylor (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) drew S&T even at 41, then the Miners grabbed the lead on a fast-break jumper by
Curtis Mosley (Chicago, Ill./) moments later.
The contest was tied at 49 when the Miners went on an 8-2 spurt to move up by six. After Drury trimmed the lead down to two at 59-57, S&T ran off seven straight points to take its biggest lead of the afternoon of nine when Taylor converted two free throws with 5:08 to play.
S&T led 70-63 with 2:43 to go, but the Panthers got a basket from Chris Ijames and a three from Brown to get to within two. After
Adam Knollmeyer (Linn, Mo./Linn) made one of two at the line, Brown drained another three from the wing to tie it at 71.
Drury had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Knollmeyer blocked Dominque Long's shot at the rim with three seconds to play.
In the first overtime, the lead changed hands four times with the Miners going on top 77-75 on Taylor's floater in the lane with 54 seconds to go. After S&T forced a turnover with 29 seconds remaining, Taylor went to the free throw line with 18 seconds on the clock but made just one of the two free throws to give the Panthers a chance.
Ijames missed a three-point try with nine seconds left, but the Panthers got the rebound and got it to Vaughan, who knocked down a second try from in front of the Drury bench as the buzzer sounded to send the game to a second overtime.
Drury went up for good at the 3:38 mark on a basket by Alfred Nelson and held the Miners without a field goal over the balance of the game to get the win.
The Miners (3-3, 0-2 GLVC) shot 50.8 percent from the field, but made only 20-of-38 at the free throw line on the afternoon. S&T also outrebounded the Panthers by a 46-31 margin, but turned the ball over 28 times which led to 32 Drury points. The Miners forced 19 Panther errors that they converted into 24 points.
Knollmeyer led the Miners with a career-high 24 points, while Taylor finished with 23 and
Marquis Jones (St. Louis, Mo./Cardinal Ritter) with 12. S&T also finished the game with seven blocked shots with four coming from
Taurance Townsel (Houston, Texas/).
Brown led all scorers with 25 points and Ijames added 20 for the Panthers.
