ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — Missouri S&T struck first and briefly carried momentum into the middle innings, but a series of big swings from Lewis proved too much to overcome as the Miners fell 18-4 on Sunday.
The Miners wasted no time setting the tone in the top of the first. Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) sparked the offense with a leadoff single and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, giving S&T an early 1-0 edge. That advantage was short-lived, however, as Lewis answered immediately in the bottom half. A three-run home run capped a four-run inning that quickly flipped the game.
Missouri S&T responded in the third. Keaton Scott (Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) ignited the frame with a single, and the Miners capitalized on pressure and execution—pushing across two runs, including an RBI knock from Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto)—to trim the deficit to 4-3.
Lewis created separation in the fourth, using a bases-clearing double to extend its lead, but the Miners continued to compete. Baugus once again made his presence felt in the fifth, working his way around the bases and scoring on a wild pitch to make it 7-4.
From there, the Flyers' offense surged. A six-run fifth inning broke the game open, highlighted by a three-run homer, and Lewis added five more in the sixth.
Baugus led the way for the Miners, reaching base in every at bat and scoring three of the team's four runs, while Krodinger added a pair of hits and an RBI.
