ROLLA, Mo. -- In a game that featured offensive fireworks from start to finish, Missouri S&T baseball displayed remarkable resilience and explosive hitting before eventually falling 17-9 to Maryville University on Friday afternoon.
After falling behind 3-0 early, the Miners got on the board in the second inning, with
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) scoring off a
Keaton Scott (Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) RBI. They added another run in the fourth, getting a lead off double from
Aiden Cizek (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) that led to a run on another Scott RBI later. Maryville's success at the plate continued though, with the Saints doubling their runs to make it a 6-2 game.
The Miners had their biggest inning of the day in the fifth, scoring five runs and taking a 7-6 lead. The Miners recorded five singles in the inning, getting RBIs off hits from
Caleb Horsey (Springdale, AR/Springdale) and Scott. The biggest swing of the inning came from
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) when the sophomore hit a bases clearing double down the left field line to score three.
Maryville responded with five runs of their own in the sixth, rebuilding a lead and moving ahead 11-7. The Miners added two runs in the bottom of the sixth but it would not be enough as the Saints continued to get add runs, pulling away for a 17-9 victory.
