ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Missouri S&T Baseball dropped their series opener against the Lewis Flyers today, losing 18-7 in a high-scoring contest. The Miners came out in control early, but a big fifth inning surge from Lewis proved too much to overcome.
The Miners wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 3-0 lead through the first four innings. Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) got things started in the second, coming around to score on an Aiden Cizek (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) single. Missouri S&T added another run in the third, with Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) crossing home plate after an RBI groundout by Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville). Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) delivered the early highlight of the day—a solo home run to left in the fourth to extend the lead to three.
Krodinger continued to pace the Miners' offense, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, double, and two RBIs. Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) also turned in a strong performance at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Damgaard added two hits and crossed the plate twice, consistently putting pressure on the Flyers' defense.
On the mound, Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) kept Lewis in check through much of his outing, allowing just four hits over 4.2 innings while the Miners built their early advantage. However, the momentum shifted in the fifth inning. After Missouri S&T held a 3-2 lead, Lewis erupted for a seven-run frame, recording 6 hits while the Miners committed 2 errors.
Despite the setback, the Miners responded with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to stay within striking distance at 10-7. Damgaard was involved in two of those runs, hitting an RBI on one and scoring a run for the other. Cizek contributed again during that stretch with an RBI, while Baugus and Krodinger each drove in runs to fuel the comeback attempt.
Ultimately, Lewis pulled away late with additional runs in the sixth, seventh, and an eight-inning grand slam that sealed the game.
Damgaard surpassed 100 career hits in the game, ending the day with 101. He was one of three Miners to record multiple hits in the game, being joined by Baugus and Krodinger.
