ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T swept the Jamestown Jimmies for the second straight match on Saturday, setting a program record for hitting percentage in a match with a .667. The team improves to 10-5 on the season with a 4-2 conference record.
S&T and Jamestown were locked in a dogfight early, with the Miners grabbing a three-point lead at 8-5 but the Jimmies caught up at 10-10. A three-point run but Jamestown gave them their largest lead of the set at 13-11, but kills by
Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) and
Caleb Rohlwing (Barrington, Ill./Barrington), along with an ace from the latter put the Miners back in front at 18-17. Trailing 22-21 later, the Miners got two klls from
Camden Seaver (Palatine, IL/William Fremd) and another from Rohlwing to give them two set points, capitalizing at 25-23 to take the first frame.
The Miners started set two in dominant fashion, putting down four kills, an ace, and a block in the first ten points. Meyer,
Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd), and
Grogan Kraus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) added kills to a 6-1 S&T run that pushed the Miner lead to 14-7 midway through the set. An ace by Meyer later gave the team their largest lead of the set at 19-9. The Jimmies went on a 5-1, but never really threatened as the Miners ended the set on a 4-1 run to take it 25-16.
Erik Giezycki (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) and Meyer added kills early in the third and final set, but the Jimmies took an 8-7 advantage early. The Miners response was six straight points, getting a pair of aces from
Zachary Carff (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) and two kills each from Meyer and Sallade to give them a 13-8 lead. Giezycki went on the next service streak, getting two aces in a 7-0 run that gave them a 21-10 advantage.
Ryan Sword (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) led the way in the final points of the match, getting two kills and working with Carff and Sallade on a triple block to end the match with a 25-13 win in set three.
Giezycki finished with 36 assists in the match, just four off of the program record for a 3-setter. Meyer had a team-high 12 killls, hitting .647 on the day and adding three aces to help tie the program record for aces in a 3-set match.
