KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Missouri S&T saved its best for last on Friday afternoon, erupting for three runs in the ninth inning to stun Truman State, 6-4, in a dramatic Great Lakes Valley Conference comeback victory.
Truman State struck first in the second inning, using a pair of hits to take a 1-0 lead, and added another run in the fourth to extend the advantage to 2-0. Missouri S&T starter Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) worked through traffic in multiple innings but limited further damage, keeping the deficit manageable and allowing the Miners to settle in offensively.
After being held scoreless through five innings, Missouri S&T broke through in the sixth. The Miners pieced together quality at-bats, getting a lead off single from Keaton Scott (Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) followed by a pair of walks to load the bases. Meyer plated a run in the following at bat, bringing Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) home before Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) crossed the plate to even the game at 2-2. The inning shifted the tone, giving the Miners visible momentum heading into the late stages.
That momentum carried into the seventh. Missouri S&T continued to apply pressure, manufacturing a go-ahead run after singles by Aiden Cizek (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) and Will Muench (Wentzville, MO/Timberland) to take a 3-2 lead. However, Truman State answered immediately. The Bulldogs pushed across a run in the bottom half of the seventh after three singles to tie the game, then struck again in the eighth to regain a 4-3 lead, putting Missouri S&T three outs away from a loss.
With their backs against the wall, the Miners opened the frame with a leadoff baserunner after Jackson Evans (Overland Park, KS/Olathe North) was hit by pitch. Pinch runner Scott Thompson (Greeley, CO/University) quickly got into scoring position, stealing second and moving to third on a passed ball in the ensuing at bat. Caleb Horsey (Springdale, AR/Springdale) took a walk next, giving the Miners two on with one out.
Will Muench (Wentzville, MO/Timberland) delivered the breakthrough moment in the next at bat. The shortstop came through with a clutch single through the right side that brought home the tying run and kept the Miners alive. S&T continued to capitalize, adding a run on a single by Scott in the next at bat before a fly out advanced Muench to third and put two outs on the board. A stolen base attempt by Scott allowed Muench to come home before the catcher was caught stealing to end the top of the inning.
With the lead in hand, Dylan Wipf (Oak Park, IL/River Forest) took control in the bottom of the ninth and shut the door. The right-hander worked efficiently, retiring Truman State in order to secure the victory and finish off the comeback effort.
Cizek, Muench, and Scott all recorded two hits with Baugus adding one more for the team total of seven on the day. Schisler worked 6.2 innings on the mound, giving up just three runs while striking out two. Wipf added a pair of strikeouts as well in just 2.1 innings pitched.
