MARION, Ill. – In a game with a near five-hour rain delay, Missouri S&T Baseball topped Maryville 5-4 in the GLVC Tournament on Thursday.
Miners 5, Saints 4
Missouri S&T moved on to the next round of the GLVC Tournament with a win over Maryville on Thursday afternoon.
Maryville started out the day swinging as they took a 3-0 lead over the first two innings. Starter
Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) threw just one inning with three runs yielded on four hits.
S&T responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to give the Miners a 4-3 lead.
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) singled, advanced to second and went to third on
Nick Krodinger's (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) single.
Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) singled to plate Baugus. After Beckham went to second on a wild pitch,
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) doubled to tie the game. An error scored Meyer to make the score 4-3.
Dylan Bates (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) pitched five scoreless innings for S&T with three punchouts. He surrendered only one hit and three walks.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the game went into a rain delay. It lasted for 4 hours and 50 minutes until the rest of the game was completed in the afternoon.
The Saints tied the game in the seventh off reliever
Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden). He gave up a run in 1 2/3 innings pitched.
In the eighth inning, Smith singled, stole second and advanced to third on a Krodinger single. Beckham bunt down a bunt to bring across Smith and give the Miners a 5-4 lead.
That score held as Meyer threw the last 1 1/3 innings. He earned the first win of his S&T career to close out the Saints.
Krodinger, Beckham and Meyer all recorded two hits for the Miners. Beckham walked, scored once and brought across two runs. The top five spots of the lineup for S&T had eight of their nine hits.
On the base paths, Smith stole a bag for S&T.
This was S&T's first GLVC Tournament win since the 2018 season. They defeated Illinois Springfield in the GLVC Tournament opening game that season.
What's Next
With the win, the Miners will play the loser of Quincy and Illinois Springfield on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. That game between the Hawks and Prairie Stars is slated for 9 a.m. on Friday morning.
