MARION, Ill. – #7 Missouri S&T Baseball fell to #2 Illinois Springfield in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament.
Prairie Stars 10, Miners 3
In the opening game of the GLVC Tournament, #2 Illinois Springfield took down #7 Missouri S&T with a final score of 10-3.
It was a pitching battle for the first two innings until UIS took a 4-0 lead in the third inning. The Miners got one run back in the top of the fourth.
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) walked and
Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) put down a bunt to advance him to second. A wild pitch sent Smith to third and
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) scored him with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1.
Starter
Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) took his fourth loss of the season after he surrendered five runs in four innings pitched. The right-hander tied a season high with six strikeouts.
Andrew Hedgecorth (Smithville, MO/Smithville) pitched in relief and was charged with three runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Illinois Springfield took an 8-1 lead in the sixth inning with three runs. S&T recorded two more runs in the seventh inning.
Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) led off the frame with a single to center field.
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) advanced him to second and Smith tripled down the right field line to plate Hooper. Krodinger singled up the middle to make the score 8-3. UIS tallied two runs in the bottom half to increase their lead to 10-3.
Reliever
Dylan Wipf (Oak Park, IL/River Forest) tossed 1 2/3 frames and gave up two unearned runs with one strikeout.
Smith went 2-for-4 with a triple, one walk, an RBI and two runs scored. S&T totaled eight hits and five walks against UIS. The pitching staff struck out 10 batters.
On the bases, Baugus and
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) both stole a bag for the Miners.
With the loss, S&T moved to 27-23 overall. They are set for a matchup with #3 Maryville on Thursday morning.
What's Next
The Miners will play the #3 Maryville Saints on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. at Mtn Dew Park. If they defeat the Saints, they would play again on Friday at 9 a.m.
