ROLLA, Mo. – Miners Baseball took down Lincoln 14-4 on Thursday afternoon to open their four-game series.
Miners 14, Blue Tigers 4
Missouri S&T defeated Lincoln with a 10-run mercy rule in eight innings on Thursday.
The Miners took an early 5-0 lead after the first two innings.
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) singled,
Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) walked and both stole a bag.
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) singled to give S&T a 1-0 lead.
Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) brought in Beckham with a sacrifice fly.
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) singled to plate Meyer and make it 3-0. In the second,
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) walked and
Landen Roberts (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair) blasted a two-run home run, the first of his career.
Starter
Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) pitched five innings and gave up three runs on four hits and two walks. The right-hander struck out three and earned his sixth win of the season.
After Lincoln made it 5-3 in the fifth, S&T recorded nine runs between the sixth and eighth innings to win 14-4. Prince was hit by a pitch and
Jackson Evans (Overland Park, KS/Olathe North) singled. With Prince on third,
Landen Roberts (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair) put down a bunt to score Prince and make it 6-3.
The Tigers got one run back in the seventh before S&T put up three runs in the home half. Meyer walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and Krodinger singled to put him at third.
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) tripled to bring home two runs. Damgaard scored Smith with a sacrifice fly.
Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) yielded an unearned run in two innings pitched. He fanned three with two hits given up.
Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden) pitched a scoreless frame for the Miners.
In the eighth, the Miners collected eight runs to end the game and win 14-4.
Tyler Bizzle (Festus, MO/Festus) and Baugus both singled to start the frame.
Jack Bell (Andover, KS/Andover Central) reached on an error to load the bases. A fielder's choice and an error scored two runs for S&T. Krodinger scored Bell with a sacrifice fly to make the score 12-4. As a pinch hitter, Alex DiGiacinto hit his first career home run, a solo shot to left field. Damgaard doubled and Prince scored him with a double to give S&T a 14-4 victory over Lincoln.
Baugus, Krodinger, Damgaard and Evans all had two hits for the Miners. Meyer walked, scored twice and brought in three runs. Roberts scored three runs, while Krodinger, Smith and Damgaard all had two RBI. The Miners had 14 hits and seven walks on Thursday. They also had six extra-base hits.
On the bases, Baugus, Beckham and Meyer all stole a bag.
With the win, the Miners moved to 25-21 and 15-14 in the GLVC. They moved up to sixth place in the GLVC with three games remaining.
What's Next
The Miners will play Lincoln in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. The regular season finale is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m. Should S&T make it, the GLVC Tournament is scheduled for May 7-10 in Marion, Illinois.
