Miners Baseball Split at William Jewell, Move to 18-13

LIBERTY, Mo. – Missouri S&T Baseball split their series at William Jewell over the weekend to move to 18-13 overall this season.

Game 1: Cardinals 8, Miners 7
 
William Jewell won game one 8-7 to open the series on Saturday.

Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) led off the game with a double to right field. He advanced to third on a passed ball and came across on a Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) RBI groundout. After the Cardinals answered with two runs in the home half, Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) started the second inning with a hit by pitch. He stole second, advanced to third and scored on a Meyer single to tie the score at 2-2.

In the fourth inning, Hooper doubled to lead it off. Jack Bell (Andover, KS/Andover Central) moved him over via bunt and Alex DiGiacinto reached on an error to plate Hooper. Meyer doubled to right center and Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) made it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly. However, William Jewell put up five runs over the fourth and fifth innings.

Starter Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) took his second loss of the season after he surrendered seven runs, six earned, on six hits and two walks. The left-hander struck out two. Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) recorded two scoreless innings of relief for S&T.

The Miners made it a one-run game in the seventh inning. Baugus singled, advanced on a Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) bunt, went to third on Krodinger's single and came across on Denton Damgaard's (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) groundout. William Jewell made it 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh.

Cody Hazzard (Mazon, IL/Yorkville Christian) was charged with an unearned run in 2/3 of an inning. Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden) tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings for the Miners.

S&T attempted a comeback in the ninth inning. Baugus singled to start the frame and advanced on a passed ball. Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) advanced him to third and Krodinger flied out to plate Baugus. The Miners could not score any other runs as they lost 8-7.

Meyer was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Baugus tallied two hits, a walk, two runs and one RBI. Krodinger plated two with two hits and Jackson Evans (Overland Park, KS/Olathe North) picked up two hits.

On the bases, Baugus and Hooper both stole a bag for the Miners.

Game Two: Miners 6, Cardinals 5
 
In game one of a doubleheader on Sunday, Missouri S&T won 6-5 in a seven-inning contest.

S&T started their scoring quickly with two in the first inning. Meyer singled to start the game and advanced on a wild pitch. Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) singled and Prince was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Krodinger walked to score one and Smith flied out to bring in Beckham and make the score 2-0. The Cardinals made it 4-2 in the second inning.

Dylan Bates (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) pitched 3 2/3 innings for S&T with four runs, three earned, yielded on three hits and six walks. He fanned five in his outing. Lucas Riebeling (Columbia, IL/Columbia) threw two scoreless frames with three punchouts.

The Miners staged a comeback in the later innings with four runs between the fifth and seventh frames. Meyer walked to start the fifth and Beckham singled to advance Meyer to third. Prince hit into a double play to make the score 4-3.

In the sixth, Smith walked, advanced to second on a bunt, went to third via groundout and came across following an Aiden Cizek (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) single. With a tie game, S&T made it 6-4 in the seventh inning. Beckham singled and DiGiacinto was hit by a pitch. Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Evans singled to right field to score two and make the score 6-4. S&T limited the Cardinals to one run in the home half as Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) recorded a groundout to end the game.

Beckham recorded four singles for the Miners with two runs scored. Evans drove in two runs and Cizek tallied one RBI.

Beckham and Bell both stole a bag in game one of the doubleheader.

Game 3: Cardinals 6, Miners 3
 
In another scheduled doubleheader, William Jewell took down S&T 6-3 in seven innings.

S&T's first run of the game came in the second inning from Smith. He blasted a solo home run to right field, the first of his collegiate career to make the score 1-0.

The Cardinals scored all six runs between the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 lead. Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) went five innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits and a walk. He struck out four and took his third loss of the season. Nate Wodka (Allen, TX/Allen) pitched a scoreless sixth inning for S&T.

The Miners put up two runs between the last two innings to finalize the score at 6-3. Beckham doubled in the sixth and scored on a Krodinger single. In the seventh, Evans singled and went to third on Landen Roberts' (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair) single. Meyer reached on a fielder's choice that scored Evans.

Evans went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Both Beckham and Smith recorded two hits.

Game 4: Miners 9, Cardinals 3
 
In the series finale at William Jewell, Missouri S&T won 9-3 on Monday afternoon.

Beckham doubled in the first frame and Krodinger doubled to right field to give S&T an early 1-0 lead. After the Cardinals tied it in the home half, Meyer doubled and Beckham walked to start the third inning. Meyer advanced to third on an error and Krodinger grounded out to make the score 2-1.

Hooper led off the fourth with a double and Evans advanced him to third via sacrifice bunt. Hooper scored on a wild pitch. Bell doubled to left center field and Roberts advanced him with a bunt. Meyer singled up the middle to make the score 4-1.

Andrew Hedgecorth (Smithville, MO/Smithville) surrendered two runs on three hits and two walks for S&T. The right-hander struck out four to earn his third win of the season. Currie pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the Miners.

With a 4-2 score, the Miners put the game away with a five-run eighth inning. Evans, Bell and Roberts all singled to start the inning. Meyer doubled to center field to plate two runs and make the score 6-2. Beckham singled to score Roberts. DiGiacinto brought home two runs with his single to make the score 9-2. The Cardinals got one run back in the ninth, but S&T won the game 9-3.

Gebbink surrendered one run in 1 1/3 innings for S&T. Cook closed out the game with a scoreless inning pitched. 

Meyer was 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. He recorded two of the six S&T doubles. Beckham went 2-for-4 with one walk, an RBI and a run scored. Krodinger drove in two runs and Smith had two hits. Evans collected two hits and Bell was 2-for-5 with two runs. As a team, the Miners had 15 hits and four walks.

On the base paths, Baugus, Smith and Evans all stole a bag for the Miners.

With the two wins, the Miners moved to 18-13 overall and 11-9 in the GLVC. On their 10-game road trip, they are 4-5 with one game to go this week.

What's Next

The Miners will play a neutral site game on Wednesday against Trevecca Nazarene in Marion, Illinois, at 3 p.m. Following that contest, the Miners will come back home to play Drury from Apr. 11-13. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
