S&T Baseball Lose Series at Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa – Missouri S&T Baseball dropped three of four at Upper Iowa over the weekend.

Game 1: Peacocks 11, Miners 10
 
Upper Iowa edged Missouri S&T 11-10 in an extra-inning contest on Friday afternoon.

The Peacocks took an early 3-0 lead after two innings until S&T made it 3-2. In the third, Jack Bell (Andover, KS/Andover Central) reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jackson Evans (Overland Park, KS/Olathe North). Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) doubled to plate Bell. S&T got another run back in the fifth. Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood), Krodinger and Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) all walked to load the bases. Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) singled to make the score 3-2.

Starter Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) went 3 2/3 innings with three runs given up on six hits and three walks. Zander Street (Festus, MO/St. Pius X) pitched 1 1/3 innings and yielded four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk.

Upper Iowa took an 8-2 lead in the sixth inning until the Miners made a comeback. With two outs in the seventh, Meyer walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored from a Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) triple. Damgaard singled to score Prince and make the score 8-4.

The Miners put up five runs in the eighth inning to take a 9-8 lead. Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Bell walked and Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) singled to load the bases. Baugus drove in two runs with a double to make it a two-run game. Krodinger walked and Meyer doubled to tie the game at 8-8. Damgaard brought home Krodinger via sacrifice fly to give S&T a 9-8 lead. The Peacocks tied the game in the ninth to force extra innings.

Cody Hazzard (Mazon, IL/Yorkville Christian) surrendered one run in 2/3 of an inning and Bryce Morgan (Benton, MO/Kelly) walked three in 1/3 of an inning. Dylan Wipf (Oak Park, IL/River Forest) struck out five batters in two scoreless frames. Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden) was charged with one run in the ninth inning. Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) took his first loss of the season with two runs yielded in 1/3 of an inning.

S&T took a 10-9 lead in the 10th inning over Upper Iowa. Prince and Damgaard both singled with one out. Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) reached on a fielder's choice as Prince scored to make the score 10-9. The Peacocks won the game in the home half 11-10 with a walk-off single.

Damgaard was 3-for-4 with a walk and three RBI. Prince went 3-for-6 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored. Krodinger and Meyer both walked twice, while Baugus drove in two runs and came across twice. Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) tallied two hits. The top five of the lineup was 9-for-23 with six walks, nine RBI and six runs scored. The Miners recorded four doubles and one triple in this game.

Baugus stole two bags for S&T, while Meyer, Beckham and Bell all took one.

Game 2: Peacocks 4, Miners 1
 
In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Upper Iowa won 4-1 over S&T.

The Peacocks went up 2-0 in the second until the Miners cut the lead in half in the third. Landen Roberts (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair) singled and both Hooper and Baugus walked to load the bases. Beckham singled to make the score 2-1.

Starter Dylan Bates (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) pitched 4 1/3 innings and was charged with four runs on six hits and three walks. The right-hander struck out four and took his third loss of the season. Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) fanned two in 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Upper Iowa put up two insurance runs in the fifth to win 4-1 in game one of the doubleheader.

Krodinger and Smith both had doubles for S&T. Six different S&T players recorded hits in the 4-1 loss.

Game 3: Miners 8, Peacocks 6
 
Missouri S&T picked up their first win of the series in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

Baugus led off the game with a single. After he stole second, he advanced to third on a groundout and scored via single from Meyer.

The Peacocks made it 2-1 in the third but S&T responded with six runs between the third and fifth innings. Beckham singled, Krodinger doubled and Meyer drove them both in with a double. After Smuth singled, he stole second and Meyer came across on the throw to make the score 4-2.

Upper Iowa tied the score in the bottom half until the Miners took the lead back in the fourth. Baugus and Beckham led off the inning with two doubles to give S&T a 5-4 lead. Krodinger advanced Beckham to third and Smith drove him in with a sacrifice fly. In the fifth, Tyler Bizzle (Festus, MO/Festus) walked and went to third on an error. Beckham brought home Bizzle to increase the lead to 7-4.

Andrew Hedgecorth (Smithville, MO/Smithville) pitched five innings and yielded six runs, five earned, on seven hits and one walk. He struck out three and picked up his fourth win of the year. Dylan Wipf (Oak Park, IL/River Forest) gave up two hits in the sixth inning as the Peacocks made the score 7-6.

S&T put up one insurance run in the seventh inning. Hooper doubled to right field to start the frame. Bell moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. He scored on a passed ball.

Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning. In his first appearance on the mound this season, Meyer struck out one in the seventh to earn a save.

Baugus went 3-for-4 with a double, one walk and two runs scored. Meyer drove in three runs and Beckham was 2-for-4 with one walk, two runs and two RBI. S&T totaled 12 hits, five doubles and six walks in the win.

On the base paths, Baugus stole three bags. Beckham, Meyer, Smith, Prince and Damgaard all took one.

Game 4: Peacocks 22, Miners 5
 
Upper Iowa took game four from S&T with a 22-5 win in seven innings.

The Peacocks put up seven runs in the first two innings over the Miners. In the fourth, Krodinger was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Smith singled and Prince reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, Bell walked to make the score 7-1.

In a bullpen game, Lucas Riebeling (Columbia, IL/Columbia) was charged with three runs in 2/3 of an inning to take his first loss of the season. Nate Wodka (Allen, TX/Allen) gave up four runs in his 2/3 of an inning. Zander Street (Festus, MO/St. Pius X) pitched a scoreless 2 2/3 innings with two punchouts.

Over the fifth and sixth innings, Upper Iowa recorded 15 runs to make the score 22-1. S&T collected four runs in the seventh inning. Bizzle singled and Aiden Cizek (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) doubled to start the frame. Off the bench, Jackson Evans (Overland Park, KS/Olathe North) blasted a three-run home run, his second of the season. Meyer and Krodinger both singled before Smith advanced them. Alex DiGiacinto singled to right field to give S&T their fifth run of the game.

Michael Streb (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) yielded three runs, while Jaden Jones (St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) gave up five runs, two earned, on two hits and two walks. Cody Hazzard (Mazon, IL/Yorkville Christian) was charged with two runs and Trey Kaberline (Gardner, KS/Gardner-Edgerton) closed out the game with five runs given up.

The Miners collected nine hits and three walks. Evans homered, while Meyer had two hits. Eight different S&T players recorded a hit.
Baugus, Meyer, Smith and Prince all stole a base.

With the series loss, the Miners are in seventh place in the GLVC. They have a chance to clinch their spot in the tournament this weekend at home.

What's Next

The Miners will be back in action to face Lincoln this weekend at home. The series will begin on Thursday at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Friday at 12 p.m. The regular season finale is slated for Saturday at 12 p.m.
