ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T Baseball took down Drury 11-7 on Friday afternoon to move into fifth place in the GLVC standings.
Miners 11, Panthers 7
The Miners downed the Panthers 11-7 to open a four-game series in Rolla.
After Drury took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, S&T tied the game in the bottom half.
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) and
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) both singled to start the inning.
Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) advanced them on a bunt. Meyer scored on a wild pitch and
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) tied the game via single.
The Panthers went up 3-2 in the fourth, but the Miners tied it up again in the bottom half.
Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) walked and
Jackson Evans (Overland Park, KS/Olathe North) singled to begin the frame. Alex DiGiacinto advanced them via bunt. Baugus' single tied the score at 3-3. With two outs in the fifth,
Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) doubled and scored on a wild pitch to give the Miners a 4-3 lead.
Starter
Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) pitched six innings with three runs, two earned, yielded on six hits. The left-hander struck out four and earned his fourth win of the season.
S&T broke the game open in the sixth inning with five runs. DiGiacinto doubled off the batter's eye in center field to start the inning. Meyer reached on an error and Baugus singled to score DiGiacinto. Prince scored Meyer with a sacrifice fly and Baugus scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-3.
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) singled and Beckham tripled to plate him. Hooper made it 9-3 with a single.
In the seventh, Baugus walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Prince singled to right center field to increase the lead to 10-3. The Panthers put up four runs in the eighth inning to make it a three-run game.
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) walked in the eighth inning and DiGiacinto was hit by a pitch. After an error on the pitcher, Meyer plated Smith with a groundout to add an insurance run and make the score 11-7.
Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) was charged with four runs on a hit and two walks in 1 1/3 innings.
Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) pitched 1/3 of an inning.
Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden) earned his second save of the season with 1 1/3 scoreless innings pitched.
On his birthday, Baugus went 4-for-5 with a walk, two RBI and three runs scored. Prince tallied three hits and three RBI, while Beckham went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Beckham continued his hitting streak to nine games. Evans recorded two hits and Hooper walked three times. S&T had 17 hits in this game, the second-most in a game this season.
Baugus stole three bags and is a perfect 16-for-16 this season on the base paths. Hooper took two bases for the Miners.
With the win, S&T moved to 20-13 overall and 12-9 in the GLVC. They passed Drury in the GLVC standings as they are now in fifth place.
What's Next
S&T and Drury will play three more games this weekend, the first two on Saturday in a doubleheader. First pitch will begin at 12 p.m. Following their series finale at 12 p.m. on Sunday, the Miners will host Pittsburg State on Apr. 15 at 3 p.m.
