ROLLA, MO -- Missouri S&T ended their series against University of Missouri-St. Louis on a win today, ending the series in a 2-2 draw.
A fielding error on the first at bat of the game would lead to three unearned runs as well as one earned run in the top of the 1st as the Tritons took a 4-0 lead early.
Jack Bell (Andover, KS/Andover Central) would reach first base on a hit by pitch in the Miners' first at bat, getting all the way home for S&T's first run without a single hit being recorded.
The score held at 4-1 until the bottom of the fourth when singles by
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) and
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) set S&T up to add a run on a groundout RBI by Alex DiGiacinto. Both teams would add runs in the 5thinning, taking the game to a 5-3 score.
The scoring would continue in the 6th inning, with two hits and an S&T error allowing the Tritons to extend their lead to 8-3. The Miners quickly returned the contest to a one-point game though, adding four runs in the bottom of the 6th off hits from Damgaard,
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood), and
Jack Bell (Andover, KS/Andover Central). However, a single and a double in the 7th by the visitors put UMSL up 10-7.
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) and Prince set the tone to start the bottom of the 7th, recording a single and a double in the first two at bats to score Meyer and make it 10-8. Three at bats later, a single by DiGiacinto brought Prince home, making it a one-point game again. The Miners continued to add runs though, scoring of a Baugus RBI single and a wild pitch to take their first lead of the game at 11-10. The Miners pitching relief prevented the Tritons from recording a hit in the final two innings, only allowing one on base to give the Miners their second conference win of the season.
Baugus had the best batting performance for the Miners today, going 2-for-3 along with a run and three RBIs.
Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) earned the win for his time in the 7th inning, while
Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) got the save... both are firsts this season, while Currie's is a career first.
