S&T Baseball Win One at Indianapolis Over the Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T Baseball lost three of their four games at Indianapolis in two doubleheaders.

Game 1: Greyhounds 7, Miners 6

In a back-and-forth series opener, Indianapolis won 7-6 over Missouri S&T.

After a scoreless first inning, the Miners took a 2-0 lead in the second. Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) tallied a walk and Aiden Cizek (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) blasted a two-run home run, his first of the season. UIndy answered in the bottom half with a run to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

S&T made it 3-1 in the fourth inning. Beckham led off the frame with a double and Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) advanced him to third. Jack Bell (Andover, KS/Andover Central) brought him home with a sacrifice fly.

After the Greyhounds made it 3-2 in the bottom half, the Miners put up three runs in the fifth inning. Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) started the inning with his double and Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) walked. Beckham blasted a three-run homer to make the score 6-2. It was his third home run of the season.

Indianapolis got those runs back in the sixth inning to cut it to a one-run game. Starter Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits and five walks. Nate Wodka (Allen, TX/Allen) took the loss after he yielded three runs, one earned, in 1 1/3 innings.

The Greyhounds took their 7-6 lead in the seventh inning and held it the rest of the game. Lucas Riebeling (Columbia, IL/Columbia) tossed a scoreless 1/3 of an inning and Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) recorded a scoreless frame.

Cizek went 3-for-4 with his homer and a walk, while Beckham was 2-for-4 with one walk, three RBI and three runs scored. Damgaard and Meyer both collected two hits as S&T had four extra-base hits.

Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) and Meyer both stole a base.

Game 2: Greyhounds 5, Miners 1

In a seven-inning contest, Indianapolis took down S&T 5-1 in game two of the Friday doubleheader.

The Greyhounds recorded a three-run home run in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. S&T answered with one run in the second. Krodinger walked and Hooper tripled to center field to plate Krodinger and make the score 3-1. Indianapolis added two insurance runs in the fifth to win 5-1.

Dylan Bates (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) took his second loss of the season after he pitched 4 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs. The right-hander struck out four with his 111 pitches. Reliever Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) fanned one in a scoreless 1 2/3 frames.

Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico), Krodinger, Hooper, Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) and Landen Roberts (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair) all had a hit for the Miners. Prince stole a bag as well.

Game 3: Greyhounds 6, Miners 4

In game one on Saturday, Indianapolis topped S&T 6-4 in a seven-inning contest.

The Greyhounds took an early 2-0 lead in the first but the Miners responded with three runs in the third. Hooper walked, Roberts singled and Bell's sacrifice bunt resulted in an error to score Hooper. Smith scored Roberts via sacrifice fly and Prince doubled to give S&T a 3-2 lead.

After Indianapolis made it 4-3 in the bottom of the third, Krodinger blasted a solo shot in the fourth to tie the game. It was his fourth homer of the year. However, the Greyhounds scored two in the home half to take a 6-4 lead that held to the end of the game.

Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) tossed 4 1/3 innings and was charged with six runs, five earned, on his hits and two walks. He struck out two and took his second loss of the season. Cody
Hazzard recorded 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden) made one out with his 1/3 of an inning pitched.

Roberts had the only multi-hit game for S&T with his two hits. Prince doubled and Krodinger homered in this game.

Game 4: Miners 9, Greyhounds 2

Missouri S&T won the series finale 9-2 on Saturday afternoon at Indianapolis.

The Miners scored seven of their nine runs over the first four innings. With one out in the first, Meyer walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Prince walked and Beckham singled to make it 1-0. Prince scored on a wild pitch to give S&T a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Roberts walked and Bell tripled to score Roberts. Smith brought Bell home with a single. The Greyhounds made it 4-1 before S&T answered in the third. Beckham recorded his second homer of the weekend to make it 5-1 in the third inning.

The Miners increased their lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning. After a double play, Meyer doubled and Prince blasted a two-run home run. It was his team-leading sixth homer of the year. UIndy responded with a solo home run in the bottom half of the fourth.

Starter Andrew Hedgecorth (Smithville, MO/Smithville) went 4 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on his four hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) picked up his third win of the season with a scoreless inning. Riebeling pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Cook closed out the game with two scoreless frames. The S&T bullpen allowed no runs or hits against UIndy in this game.

S&T recorded two more runs over the last four innings to win 9-2. In the sixth, Meyer singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a Prince double. Bell led off the eighth inning with a single and Alex DiGiacinto advanced him to second. Bell went to third on a passed ball and came across on a Prince single.

Prince was 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBI. Bell also had three hits with his walk, RBI and two runs. Meyer recorded two hits and three runs, while Beckham tallied two hits, two RBI and one run scored. Hooper walked twice for S&T. As a team, the Miners recorded 14 hits and seven walks. They also had six extra-base hits.

Meyer and Hooper both stole a bag for the Miners.

With the 1-3 weekend, Missouri S&T moved to 16-11 overall and 9-7 in the GLVC. They moved to sixth place in the conference.

What's Next

S&T will stay on the road next weekend to play William Jewell from Apr. 4-6. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. They will play Trevecca Nazarene on Apr. 8 in Marion, Illinois. Their next home series is scheduled for Apr. 11-13 against Drury.
