ROLLA, MO – Missouri S&T got school record performances from
Owen Fraser (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) and
Hailey Smith (Wentzville, MO/Timberland) in its opening meet of the outdoor season, while also having another reach an NCAA Division II provisional mark along the way at the Miner Invitational held over the weekend at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Fraser broke his own mark set a year ago with a throw of 189-11, which he recorded on his final throw of the competition. He broke the record in the fifth round with a mark of 185-feet, then exceeded it on his last throw of the day and his performance also met the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard.
Fraser hit his second provisional mark of the day in the shot put, where he posted a toss of 57-7 ¼ on his opening round effort to win that competition.
Ethan Crouch (Rolla, MO/Rolla) had a second place finish to Fraser in the shot put, posting a mark of 55-3¾ that also met the NCAA provisional standard.
Missouri S&T also got a winning effort from
Henry Born (Lake Quivira, KS/Shawnee Mission Northwest) in the 1,500-meters, as he narrowly missed both the school record and NCAA provisional mark with his time of 3:48.76.
S&T got second place showings from
Ayden Jones () in the long jump with a leap of 22-6 ½ and
Luke Bass (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) in the high jump as he cleared 6-5 ¼.
Andrew Bacon (Webster Groves, MO/Webster Groves) took third in the 1,500-meters in 3:58.40,
Evan Mitchell (Shawnee, KS/Shawnee Mission Northwest) came in fifth in 4:01.88 and
Joshua Nunn (Independence, MO/Truman) was S&T's third finisher among the top 10 in that event with his time of 4:05.20.
Fraser added a third place showing in the hammer throw Friday with a top mark of 179-11, while
Kevin McCole (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) was fourth at 172-4 and
Matthew Hoffman (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) finished seventh at 156-7. Hoffman also finished ninth in the discus throw with his mark of 147-5.
Other third place finishes by Miners came from
Aiden Kearns (St. Charles, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) in the 800-meters, as he recorded a time of 1:56.56 and
Sam Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro), who grabbed third in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.59 seconds.
Justin Chadwell (Norwood, MO/Norwood) placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21-8 ¼ as did
Isaac Pollard (Lindale, TX/Lindale) in the pole vault as he cleared 14-1¼, with teammate
Xander Hall (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) finishing right behind him in fifth with a clearance of 13-7½.
Vince Scott (Gilberts, IL/Hampshire) finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 46-2¾, while Chadwell finished in eighth with a leap of 45-7¼ and
Tristan Jones (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) in 10
th with a jump of 44-2. In the javelin throw,
Rhet Liley (Jackson, MO/Jackson) came in sixth place with a throw of 187-2 and
Nolan Sebourn (Eureka, MO/Eureka) finished 10
th at 181-2.
The women's performances – the bulk of which came in field events -- were headed by Smith, who won the triple jump with a school record mark of 38-3½. S&T also had a pair of individuals tie for second in their respective events, as
Olivia Henkel (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) did so in the high jump as she tied for that spot with Lewis' Karmen Kurowicka as both cleared the bar at 5-5 and
Elizabeth Rothweiler (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) finished in a three-way tie for that spot in the pole vault at 11-3¾.
Sydney Morris (Jefferson City, MO/Calvary Lutheran) finished among the top 10 in three throwing events, headed by a fourth place finish in the discus with a toss of 127-9. Morris also placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 39-feet and was seventh on Friday in the hammer throw as she finished with a top mark of 128-5.
Madelaine Fischer () was third in the discus ahead of Morris, as she posted a top throw of 129-1 and added a ninth place finish this weekend in the hammer throw with a mark of 122-11.
S&T had three finishers among the top 10 in the long jump, led by
Ali McClure's (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) leap of 17-9½ that was good for fifth place.
Maya Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) finished seventh in the event with a mark of 17-5¾ and
Lauryn Fenoglio (Granite City, IL/Granite City) took 10
th with her mark of 16-11¼.
Wright was also one of two top-10 finishers for S&T in the 400-meter hurdles as she placed fifth with a time of 1:06.08; the other was
Olivia Miles (), who placed ninth in 1:09.21.
The Miners' next competition will take place next weekend, with selected individuals competing at the Washington University Distance Carnival in St. Louis and others at the Bearcat Invitational at Southwest Baptist in Bolivar. Both meets will be contested on Friday and Saturday.
What's Next
The Miners head to Bolivar for the Bearcat Invitational next weekend, with meet days being the 28th and 29th.
