SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri S&T Baseball won two out of three games against Southwest Baptist this week highlighted by an 18-hit performance in the finale.
Game 1: Bearcats 7, Miners 6
In Friday night's game, Missouri S&T fell to Southwest Baptist from a walk-off home run.
The Miners were on the board first after
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) walked and
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) tripled to make the score 1-0. SBU responded in the bottom half and took a 2-1 lead in the second inning.
In the third, S&T took a 3-2 lead.
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) singled, and Meyer followed him up with a single. Prince singled to score his second run of the game and tie up the contest. With the bases loaded,
Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) flied out to drive in Meyer.
Landen Roberts (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair) led off the fourth inning with a triple.
Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) drove a ball to center field and ran all the way home for a home run to make the score 5-2. However, the Bearcats answered once again with three runs in the bottom half to tie the game. They took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Starter
Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) pitched 3 2/3 innings for the Miners and gave up five runs on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) came in relief with four innings pitched and just one run surrendered. He fanned four batters in his appearance.
The Miners fought back in the ninth inning to tie the game. Prince walked and advanced to third base on two wild pitches. With two outs, Hooper singled to make the score 6-6.
Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) took the loss for S&T after he gave up a walk-off home run to Marcos Franjul. It was his first loss of the year. Prince went 2-for-4 with a walk, one run scored and two RBI. Hooper and Baugus drove in two runs, while Meyer came across twice.
Jack Bell (Andover, KS/Andover Central) stole a bag for the Miners.
Game 2: Miners 8, Bearcats 4
The Miners responded in game two of the series with an 8-4 victory against SBU.
Once again, S&T scored first as they took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs, Damgaard walked and Prince doubled to score a run.
Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) led off the second inning with a hit by pitch followed by a passed ball to bring him to second.
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) brought him home via single to make the score 2-0.
The Miners had their most productive inning of the game in the third where they put up four runs. After
Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) and Damgaard both got on, Prince bunted them over into scoring position. Meyer singled to score one and advanced to second via wild pitch. Krodinger scored both runs and
Bricen Smith (Perry, GA/Mount de Sales Academy) plated Krodinger with his single.
S&T starter
Estin McBroom (Monett, MO/Monett) tossed five scoreless frames with four hits and two walks yielded. He struck out six on 81 pitches thrown.
To lead off the sixth inning, Smith tripled down the left field line. Bell laid down a bunt to score Smith and increase the lead to 7-0. In the eighth, Bell walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third.
Tyler Bizzle (Festus, MO/Festus) brought him home to make the score 8-0.
Reliever
Andrew Hedgecorth (Smithville, MO/Smithville) pitched three scoreless innings with only one hit and two walks given up. He fanned two in his outing.
Nick Currie (Granville, IL/Putnam County) surrendered four runs in the ninth inning to finalize the score at 8-4.
McBroom earned the win in his 2025 debut. Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Miners. Krodginer scored two runs and came across twice. Prince added a double with two walks. Bell and Beckham each stole a base in S&T's win.
Game 3: Miners 13, Bearcats 8
Missouri S&T won the final game of the three-game series 13-8 against Southwest Baptist at Meador Park.
The Miners put up five runs in the first inning to set the tone early. After Bell led off the inning with a walk, Beckham blasted a two-run home run, his first of 2025. S&T loaded the bases following a new pitcher for SBU.
Jackson Evans (Overland Park, KS/Olathe North) doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and make the score 5-0.
In the second inning, S&T recorded two more runs to increase the lead to 7-0. Beckham singled with one out followed by a two-run homer from Damgaard, his first of the season. The Bearcats responded with three runs over the next two inning to make the score 7-3 in the middle of the fourth inning.
Dylan Bates (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) pitched 3 2/3 innings for S&T. He surrendered three runs, two earned, on three hits and five walks. The reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Week struck out five batters.
In the home half of the fourth, Krodinger was hit by a pitch and Meyer his first home run of the year, a two-run shot. S&T added on two more runs in the fifth to add to the lead at 11-3. Hooper led off with a triple and Bell scored him via single. After a Beckham single, Damgaard reached on a fielder's choice while Bell came across to score.
SBU put up two runs in the sixth inning to bring the deficit to six runs. In the home half, Meyer doubled and Smith singled to begin the inning. They both advanced on a wild pitch and Evans scored
Meyer with a sacrifice fly. Beckham and Damgaard kept the hit parade going in the seventh inning with two singles. Krodinger singled to left field to plate Beckham and make the score 13-5.
In relief,
Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden) tossed 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs.
Cody Hazzard (Mazon, IL/Yorkville Christian) tossed a scoreless inning and
Jaden Jones (St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) yielded three runs, one earned, in his outing.
Nate Wodka (Allen, TX/Allen) and
Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) recorded a scoreless frame each to guide S&T to a victory.
The Bearcats attempted a comeback with three runs in the eighth inning, but the Miners held off and won 13-8.
Beckham went 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored to lead the game. Evans tallied three hits and four RBI in his second game of the season. Meyer scored three times with two hits and two RBI. Damgaard, Krodinger and Smith all had multi-hit games. S&T recorded seven extra-base hits with three home runs. Krodinger and Evans both stole a bag for S&T. Bates earned his first win of the 2025 season.
What's Next
The Miners will open the home slate of the 2025 schedule this weekend against Truman. They will play two doubleheaders with times of 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Following that series, they will take on Pittsburg State on the road on Mar. 5.
