JOPLIN, Mo. – Missouri S&T Baseball fell 2-3 to Missouri Southern on Monday afternoon in their season opener.
For the first six innings, the game was a pitchers duel as it was 0-0 until the seventh inning. Miners starter
Dylan Bates (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) went nine up, nine down in the first three innings to limit the Lions offense. Bates pitched seven total innings with only three hits and two walks given up for S&T. He struck out four batters.
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) doubled to lead off the seventh inning for S&T.
Will Beckham (Mountain Home, AR/Mountain Home) advanced him with a sacrifice bunt and
Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) singled to make the score 1-0.
Bode Gebbink (Saint Joseph, IL/Saint Joseph-Ogden) tossed a scoreless eighth inning of relief for the Miners as they went into the ninth with a 1-0 lead.
In the ninth,
Garrett Meyer (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) was hit by a pitch and Prince singled. Beckham loaded the bases with a single before
Nick Hooper (Grain Valley, MO/Grain Valley) walked to score a run.
With a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth, the Lions offense staged a comeback as they had two runners on base with two outs. They singled to score one and tied the game on a wild pitch. Missouri Southern walked off the Miners with a single to win 3-2.
Prince went 2-for-3 with a run scored for S&T.
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) stole two bags with a hit. In total, the Miners had five hits and two walks compared to Missouri Southern's seven hits and four walks.
Jacob Cook (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) took the loss for S&T with three unearned runs allowed in 2/3 of an inning.
What's Next
Missouri S&T is back in action this weekend to host Sioux Falls. They will play a four-game series starting on Friday at 1 p.m. Following this series, S&T will welcome Truman on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. to begin another four-game set.
