Track & Field Opens Indoor Season Saturday at Mel Tjeerdsma Classic

12/3/2025 10:49:00 AM

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T men's and women's track & field will open their 2025–26 indoor campaign this Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri State University. Competition will be held inside the Hughes Fieldhouse in Maryville, Mo., with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and running events starting at noon. Pole Vault will compete on Friday, Dec. 5, starting at 6 p.m.

The meet will serve as the first opportunity for several returners and newcomers to compete ahead of a full indoor schedule that includes GLVC Championships in late February.

About the Meet
The Mel Tjeerdsma Classic annually attracts strong NCAA Division II competition from across the Midwest region. The event is conducted on a 300-meter Beynon BSS 300 surface with six lanes on the oval and eight on the straightaways, providing a fast environment for early-season performances.

All spectators must enter through the Upper East Side doors of Hughes Fieldhouse. Admission is $5, payable by card only at the door.

Live statistics and results will be available throughout the meet.

About the Miners
Both Missouri S&T programs enter the 2025–26 indoor season with momentum after strong finishes at last year's GLVC Indoor Championships, where the men placed fifth, and the women finished seventh. Under first-year head coach Nikki Segrest, the Miners bring a deep core of returners and a promising group of newcomers eager to elevate the program.

The men return championship-level talent, highlighted by Owen Fraser (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville), the 2025 NCAA Division II discus national champion and multi-time All-Region performer, along with Jake Salazar-Blair (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista), the reigning GLVC javelin champion, who strengthens an already impressive throws group. On the women's side, the Miners feature key returners such as Hailey Smith (Wentzville, MO/Timberland), who set a school triple jump record last spring; Maya Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro), an NCAA provisional qualifier in the pentathlon; and Sydney Morris (Jefferson City, MO/Calvary Lutheran), who posted top-five program marks in the shot put during her debut season. With strong contributors across sprints, jumps, distance, and throws, S&T is poised for impactful early-season performances.

What's Next
Missouri S&T will return to full competition on Saturday, Jan. 10, competing at the Redhawks Invite in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
