S&T Women's Volleyball Falters at Quincy Classic

QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T Women's Volleyball fell in three matches over the weekend at the Quincy Classic.

Game One Recap vs. Maryville (2-3 L)

On Friday night, Missouri S&T fell to Maryville in a five-set thriller at Pepsi Arena. This match does not count to the GLVC record, similar to the Saturday match against Quincy.

The Saints won the first set 25-19 over the Miners. Maryville's early 5-1 lead carried them through the set as they never trailed to the Miners. Madison Offerman (Herscher, IL/Herscher) got S&T within two at 15-13 but the Saints rattled off three straight points to eventually go up 1-0 in the match.

Missouri S&T responded in the second set with a 25-17 win to tie up the match. They went down 9-4 early but five points in seven tries made the score 13-12. Over halfway through the set, S&T recorded a five-point run to take a 19-16 lead. Two Maryville attacking errors and an ace from Isabelle Monaco (O'Fallon, MO/Living Word Christian) guided the Miners. S&T went on a late six-point run to win the set 25-17. Offerman tallied two kills and an attacking error ended the side.

The Miners went up 2-1 after a 25-21 third set win. They went up 12-7 midway through the set thanks to a six-point run. Another four-point run later in the set quickly made the score 17-10 as the Miners and Saints traded points the rest of the way. A service error gave S&T a 25-21 victory.

Maryville tied up the match with a 25-21 fourth set win. An early seven-point run made the score 7-2 as the Miners could not respond early in the set. They got within three points at 22-19 but Maryville ended the run and won the fourth set 25-21.

In a sudden death fifth set, the Saints won 15-10. The two teams traded points throughout the first half of the set, but a Maryville four-point run guided them to a win. The Miners made the score 15-13 but an Ella Brinkmann kill and an attacking error closed out the match.

Alina Carrillo (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) led the match with 20 kills with 18 digs. She added a .296 hitting percentage. In her first game of 2024, Monaco collected 12 kills, two aces, a block and 16 digs. Jordan Burton (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) had 10 kills and Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville) added seven. Setter Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion) chipped in 26 assists and Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) had 18 with 11 digs. Defensively, Smith had four blocks, including two solo blocks. Libero Avery Jones (Broken Arrow, OK/Broken Arrow) had 22 digs.

Game Two Recap vs. Winona State (0-3 L)

The Miners were swept by Winona State in their first game on Saturday.

In the first set, the Miners fell 25-16, followed by a 25-15 second set defeat. In the third set, the Miners attempted a comeback but fell 25-23. In that third set, S&T was down until a three-point run gave them an 18-16 lead. Winona State rattled off four-straight points to take a 22-21 lead and eventually win the set.

In the match, Monaco led the Miners with 12 kills. Carrillo was one behind with 11 and Offerman tallied three blocks. Jones chipped in 17 digs and Arand recorded 13 assists and seven digs.

Game Three Recap vs. Quincy (1-3 L)

S&T fell to Quincy in a non-conference matchup to drop to 2-5 on the season.

The Hawks closely took the first set as they won 29-27. As the two teams traded runs back and forth throughout the set, they eventually were tied 25-25. The Miners were within a set point two times, but Emma Wijnbergen ended the set with a kill.

In the second set, the Miners flipped the script as they won 25-23. The Hawks got out to a quick 8-3 lead but S&T crawled back and eventually strung enough points to take a 19-18 lead. The two teams traded two-point runs down the stretch, but the Miners came out on top. An attack error from Wijnbergen tied the match 1-1.

Quincy took a 2-1 lead after they won 25-17 in the third set. The Hawks went up 20-11 and the Miners could not come back. Samantha Hansen closed out the set with a kill.

To conclude the weekend, the Miners fell 28-26 in the fourth set. S&T came out swinging with an early 6-0 lead that turned into 10-2. However, the Hawks answered with eight points in nine tries. They eventually took a 15-14 lead, but Missouri S&T took the lead back at 18-16. At the end of the set, S&T was down 24-23 but came back and went up 25-24 to try and force a fifth set. Quincy answered and won the set 28-26 after a kill from Elena Kasavica.

Offerman had a career day with 11 kills and eight blocks, five of them being solo blocks. Lexi Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, IL/Newsome) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Carrillo collected nine kills and 11 digs, while Burton hit .300 with six kills. In total, the Miners recorded 22 total blocks. Smith had nine and Offerman tallied eight. Carillo recorded five blocks and Mehaffy tallied four.

What's Next

Missouri S&T will play in their last non-conference tournament of the year at the Pittsburg State Regional Challenge this weekend. On Sept. 20, they will play Washburn at 9 a.m. and Henderson State at 4:30 p.m. The following day, the Miners will face Emporia State at 2 p.m.
