Miners Women's Volleyball Conclude Non-Conference Play at Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Missouri S&T Women's Volleyball was swept over the weekend at the Pittsburg State Regional Challenge.

Game One Recap vs. Washburn (0-3 L)

In their first match of the weekend, Missouri S&T was swept by Washburn.

Washburn took the first set 25-12 over S&T. 10 of the first 12 points of the set went to Washburn but the Miners started to come back as they made it 14-9 halfway through the set. The Ichabods eventually won the set and went up 1-0 in the match.

The Miners fell in the second set 25-20. They went up early in the set 4-3 and that eventually turned into 9-5. Midway through the set, Washburn recorded seven points in eight tries as they took the lead back 16-13. The two teams went back and forth for the rest of the set as the Miners went down in the match 2-0.

Washburn took the third and final set with a score of 25-17. An 11-6 early lead quickly turned into 18-9 for the Ichabods. S&T tried to complete a comeback, but Washburn prevailed and took the match via sweep.

Isabelle Monaco (O'Fallon, MO/Living Word Christian) led the match with 12 kills. She was one dig away from a double-double with nine. Alina Carrillo (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) collected her fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs. Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) tallied 18 assists and seven digs. Defensively, Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville) had five blocks.

Game Two Recap vs. Henderson State (1-3 L)

Henderson State took the night match over Missouri S&T on Friday night in four sets.

The Miners won the first set 25-21 over the Reddies. An early 3-2 S&T lead held through the entire set as the two teams traded points the entire way. The Miners went up 15-12 midway through the set after the recorded four points in six tries. Late in the set, the Miners had five points in their last six attempts to win 25-21.

In the second set, the Reddies went up 9-1 very early and they held that lead all the way through the set. The Miners went on a four-point run later in the set, but Henderson State won it 25-15 to tie the match.

Henderson State won the third set 25-21 to go up 2-1 in the match. Early on, they went up 9-4 that turned into 18-10. S&T got within two points at 19-17 thanks to a four-point run. After the Reddies went up 24-17, Missouri S&T put up four straight points, but Henderson State closed out the set after a kill from Larkin Luke.

The Reddies closed out the match with a 25-19 set four victory. Once again, Henderson State went up early with an 8-3 lead, but the Miners brought it back to a two-point deficit at 12-10. The two teams traded runs throughout the set, but Henderson State eventually come out on top 25-19.

Monaco tied the match lead for kills with 14 and 17 digs. Carrillo also had a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. She also added six blocks. Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville) had seven kills and six blocks. Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion) recorded 18 assists and Arand chipped in 16 assists and 10 digs. Adelyn Weiler (Ste. Genevieve, MO/Valle Catholic) had 14 digs.

Game Three Recap vs. Emporia State (0-3 L)

The Hornets won the first set 25-20 over the Miners to go up 1-0 in the match. After Emporia State had an opening four-point run, S&T recorded seven points in eight tries to go up 7-6. Emporia State then went up 12-8 after a run of their own. The two teams traded two and three point runs the rest of the set as the Hornets won 25-20.

In the second set, the Miners pushed the set to extra points, but fell 27-25 to the Hornets. S&T held the lead for most of the set, but the Hornets tallied five points in six attempts to tie the set at 23-23. Emporia State recorded four of the last five points to win 27-25.

The Hornets won the match in the third set with a 25-15 victory. They went up 8-3 early in the set. A seven-point run midway through the set made it 17-7. The Miners attempted to comeback, but an early lead closed out S&T in their final game of the weekend.

Mehaffy tied for the lead in kills with eight. She also had 10 assists, nine digs and three blocks. Carrillo tallied eight kills and 15 digs. Monaco collected seven kills and nine digs. Smith picked up four blocks and Arand had 17 assists.

What's Next

Missouri S&T will begin GLVC play on Sept. 27 at UIS and Sept. 28 at Quincy. They will play their first home games of the season on Oct. 4-5 against Drury and Southwest Baptist. Tickets for the 2024 season can be found here.
