KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T got two school records in the hammer throw on the opening day of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, as Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) and Sydney Stephens (Plattsburg, MO/Plattsburg) established new marks in those events.

Luebbert smashed the school mark he set two weeks ago with a throw of 225-10 to win the event by over 14 feet over Lewis' Levi Graham and was one of three Miners to score in the event.  Meanwhile in the women's hammer throw, Stephens recorded a seventh place finish and broke the S&T school record in the process with a mark of 155-3.

Luebbert had the four best throws in the competition Thursday as all four exceeded 65 meters; the winning throw came in the second round.  He was joined among the scorers by Owen Fraser (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville), who took fourth with a throw of 182-2 and Kevin McCole (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell), whose throw of 176-8 was good for fifth.

Joshua Nunn (Independence, MO/Truman) scored for the Miners as well in the 10,000-meters as he finished seventh in the event, recording a time of 31:10.01.  Combined with the 19 points scored by the hammer throwers, the Miners finished the first night of the meet with 21 points, five points in back of Lewis in second place.

S&T also has three of the top five and four of the top eight at the midway point of the decathlon, with Otto Knittel (Spring Hill, KS/Spring Hill) leading the way with 3,481 points.  Caleb Craft (Jackson, MO/Jackson) is currently third with 3,199 points and Dawson Sherer (Galena, MO/Galena) is fifth at 3,076 points; the eighth place spot is held by Kamden Lockwood (Herscher, IL/Herscher) with 2,887 points.

Knittel had the top showing in the 100-meter dash, high jump and 400-meters, while Sherer and Craft went 1-2 in the shot put.

Through the first four events of the heptathlon, Maya Wright (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro) sits in third place with a total of 2,593 points and Lauryn Fenoglio (Granite City, IL/Granite City) is fifth with 2,246 points. Fenoglio had the second-best performance in the shot put and Wright had the third-best showing in the other three events contested on Thursday, the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and 200-meters.
