ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T defeated the Calvary University Warriors 107-50 today… improving to 7-0 for the just the second time in school history. The only other time that the Miners started the season 7-0 was in 1986-87 season with a team that featured three all-conference nominees including All-American Duane Huddleston and
Bill Walker.
The Warriors were able to hang with the Miners in the opening minutes of the game. While never leading, they did get a few impressive field goals from Matthew Hammonds early to keep it a one-point game in the first three minutes.
The Miners dropped the hammer on the Warriors in a 28-2 run over the next eight minutes, with
Garrett Hines (Nixa, MO/Nixa) and
Blaise Beauchamp (Minnetonka, MN/Hopkins) combining for 16 of those points as the Miners took a 36-9 lead.
Calvary started spreading the ball around better more than halfway through the first, scoring their next four buckets from four different players. S&T continued to surge ahead though and led 58-19 at the half.
The Miners began to pull even further away at the beginning of the second half, with a layup from
Alex Benassi (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) at 16:15 putting the team up by 46 points. Hammonds would respond by leading the Warriors on a 9-2 run over the next two minutes, cutting the Miners' lead to 39 points. The Miners answered with a run of their own though, putting up 16 straight unanswered points to pull ahead 87-32 inside of eight minutes to play.
The Warriors would be able to pull within 50 points of S&T just once more before the Miners ended the game on an 11-3 run for a 107-50 victory over the visitors.
Beauchamp led the team in scoring, putting up fifteen points and going 5-of-7 from the field. Beauchamp,
Cameron Stovall (St. Louis, MO/Vashon), and
Dwayne Foley (St. Louis, MO/Ladue) all scored season-highs today with 15, 10, and 12, respectively, with Foley's being a career-high as well. While
Zac Brown (Collinsville, OK/Collinsville) did not score at all, he did lead the team in rebounds (8) and blocks (3).
