Miners open weekend road swing Thursday at SBU

1/9/2024 4:40:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – A weekend road swing through southwest Missouri awaits Missouri S&T's women's basketball team in the upcoming week as the Miners prepare for contests against Southwest Baptist and Drury in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The Miners will take on SBU Thursday in a 5:30 p.m. contest in Bolivar, Mo., before heading to Springfield, Mo., on Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. tilt against the seven-time defending GLVC champions.

Missouri S&T heads into the weekend still looking to break into the win column in GLVC play after losing conference matchups last week to Lewis and McKendree, the two teams currently sitting atop the standings.  S&T did get a pair of double figure performances from Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) in the two games, including her fifth double-double of the season against Lewis.

Roberts continues to rank among the GLVC leaders in several categories as she is currently fifth in scoring at a team-leading 17.3 points per game, third in rebounding with 8.5 per contest and field goal percentage at 55.9 percent and fourth in blocked shots with 19, or 1.3 per game.

Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) is just outside of double figures with an average of 9.9 points per game and is shooting a team-best 38 percent from three-point range; her 19 three-point baskets are second to Addyson Kent's (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) 30, where Kent's average of two per game is the eighth-best mark in the GLVC.  Kent continues to lead the Miners (3-12) with 40 assists and 24 steals on the season.

ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTIST: The Bearcats rebounded from a home loss to William Jewell last week by edging Quincy 68-65 Saturday on the road, improving to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in the GLVC.  SBU has won five of its last six games, including a road win at Drury during that stretch as it has held four of the six teams below the 40 percent mark from the field.

The Bearcats do not have a double figure scorer this season; Karlee Holland leads the Bearcats with an average of nine points per game and is shooting 38.5 percent from three-point range with a team-leading 25 three-point baskets.  Kallyn Stumbo is averaging 8.9 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game, while Odett Schlegl is scoring 8.5 points a game and has connected 24 times from beyond the arc.

ABOUT DRURY: The Lady Panthers, who have gone 126-6 in GLVC play during their seven-year run as conference champions, are sitting at 4-3 in league play and 9-4 overall as play begins this weekend.  Drury snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday when it routed Rockhurst 77-49 behind a 57.7 percent shooting performance from the field.

Beth Matas Martin, who led the Lady Panthers with 15 points in the win, leads the way in the scoring column with an average of 15.2 points per game and has a league-leading 37 three-point baskets.  Martin is shooting 43.5 percent from beyond the arc, a mark that ranks second in the GLVC.  Drury has two others in double figures in Reese Schaaf with an average of 13.5 points per game – she is shooting 55.7 percent from the field – and Caitlynn Daniels, who is averaging 12.6 points and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds per game.  Daniels also leads Drury with a GLVC-leading 72 assists, while Anna Hitt has recorded 17 steals on the year.
