Miners head to Illinois to open GLVC slate

9/13/2023 5:32:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – With the non-conference portion of the season completed and its first win under its belt, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team embarks on the start of its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule this weekend with a road trip to the state of Illinois.

The Miners, 1-2-1 on the season, open the GLVC slate Friday with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Quincy, then head over to Springfield to take on Illinois Springfield in a 2:30 p.m. match on Sunday.

After dropping a tough 3-2 decision Friday to Kentucky Wesleyan after the Panthers scored the game-winning with under nine minutes remaining, the Miners put together their best performance of the season Sunday in blanking a previously undefeated Union squad 2-0 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

S&T outshot the Bulldogs 23-4 in Sunday's win, but wasn't able to get on the scoreboard until the 69th minute of play when Mike Banazik scored.  The Miners got another goal just over six minutes later from Derek Schlenker (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) to provide a cushion for goalkeeper Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central), who made two saves and picked up his second shutout of the season.

Joseph comes into play this weekend with a 1.58 goals against average and 16 saves in 341 minutes of playing time.

Banazik is the only Miner with more than one goal on the year as he has scored twice, while Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) has three assists to lead S&T in that department.  Four Miners have scored goals this season, as Santiago Cervantes (Collierville, TN/Collierville) and Joao Vieira (Punta del Este, Uruguay/International College) scored in the loss to Kentucky Wesleyan.

ABOUT QUINCY: The Hawks earned their first win of the season Saturday when they downed Newman 3-2.  Quincy scored all three of its goals – two by Lewis Chapman – in a span of just over 10 minutes in the first 21 minutes of action, then held on in the second half to improve to 1-3 on the year.

Quincy has scored seven goals in its first four games of the season, with Chapman hitting the net three times.  Rennato Ramos has a goal and two assists for four points, while goalkeeper George Roke has a 2.86 goals against average in 315 minutes of play.

ABOUT ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD: The Prairie Stars, who will host seventh-ranked Maryville Friday, come into the weekend at 1-1-2 overall but are winless in their last three outings.  After beating a nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley State team in its season opener, UIS played to two tied and then lost 2-1 at Purdue Northwest on Saturday.

UIS, who has scored in all four games this season, is led offensively by Adrian Adames with two goals and Max Tweddle with three assists.  Connor McFadden and Andrea Scapolo have equally shared the goaltending duties and have a combined goals against average of 1.25; only 10 shots have reached the Prairie Star goal this season, but five of them have been goals.
