BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Missouri S&T baseball team had itself a day as the Miners scored 39 runs to sweep a doubleheader at Southwest Baptist, winning by scores of 13-5 and 26-7 to extend its winning streak to a season-high six games.
It was a day where the Miners dented the record books, beginning with
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) tying the school's all-time homerun record with his 21st career homer in the sixth inning of game two. Although the 26 runs fell short of the single game record – it was the third-most in a game in program history – the 39 runs were the most ever by S&T in a doubleheader and tied the most scored in back-to-back games. The Miners also established new marks for runs scored in three straight games (47) and four straight contests (57) thanks to the game two outburst.

Game 1: Miners 13, Bearcats 5Â
Â
The Miners (17-15, 8-11 Great Lakes Valley Conference) wasted little time in jumping on top in the opener, as
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) reached on an error and later scored on an RBI triple by Wood that opened a six-run first inning for the Miners. The scoring continued when
Tommy Ruether (Washington, MO/Washington) reached on a fielder's choice to score Wood, then S&T got an RBI single from
Sam Monroe (Moline, Ill./Moline), a run-scoring groundout by
Michael Hughes (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair) and a two-run single from
Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) to complete the scoring in the opening inning.Â
S&T added to its lead in the fourth with another four-run outburst, which started when Sill knocked in Krodinger with a hit.
Cole Hampton (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the second run, then the Miners got their other runs on a hit by Ruether and a sacrifice fly by
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette).
Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) blanked the Bearcats (7-26, 3-12 GLVC) over the first three innings, but SBU touched him for three runs in the fourth on a leadoff homer by Dean Hagenhoff and a two-run shot moments later by Ryan Loeffler to cut the deficit to 10-3.
Â
In the sixth, SBU added a run on a Jacobo sacrifice fly, but the Miners scored three in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. The first run crossed the plate on a wild pitch, then Hampton and Ruether drove in runs later in the inning.Â
Â
Krodinger had three hits for the Miners, who outhit SBU 11-9 in the opener, while Ruether had two hits and drove in three. Morrow pitched 5.2 innings and he struck out five to pick up his second win of the season. Â
Game 2: Miners 26, Bearcats 7
Â
The bats remained hot for S&T in game two as the Miners opened the nightcap with a five-run first and scored in six of the seven innings, scoring at least four runs in four of those frames.
S&T's first inning scoring started with RBI double to left from Hampton that scored Sill, then a passed ball allowed Wood to score the second run. After Ruether drew a walk, Monroe followed with a three-run blast over the right field wall to cap off the inning.Â
Â
SBU got a run back in the bottom portion of the first, but the Miners erupted for four more runs in the second, starting with an infield single by Sill that scored
Matt Souza (Escondido, CA/Christian) that was followed by another RBI double by Hampton and a two-run single by Reuther that increased the lead to 9-1.Â
Â
In the bottom of the frame, the Bearcats scored three times to cut the lead to 9-4, but S&T put another five-run inning on the board in the third that began when Souza scored
Carter Bither (Springfield, MO/Springfield Catholic) with a hit. Wood added a two-run single through the left side and Hampton followed with a two-run homer to finish the scoring in the third..Â
S&T scored two in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Souza and a sacrifice fly by Burgess, then after being held off the scoreboard in the fifth, got the record-tying, two-run homer by Wood in the sixth. The Miners then rattled off eight runs in the seventh with six players driving in runs in the inning.
Jack Arbuckle (Webster Groves, MO/Webster Groves) scored
Keaton Scott (Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) on a sacrifice fly for the first run, then Sill drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run before Wood drove in two with a single and Hampton delivered a two-run double. S&T's final runs came courtesy of an RBI single by Scott and another run being forced home when Bither was hit by a pitch.
Â
Six Miners had at least two hits apiece in the game, led by Hampton's first four-hit game of his career. Hampton also drove in six runs as did Wood, while
Kyle Athmer (Albers, IL/Breese Central Community) – who entered the game in the second inning – threw 3.2 innings and fanned six as he was credited with the win.Â
Â
The series will conclude Saturday afternoon with a single game scheduled for a noon start.
