SMITHVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T's second venture into match play at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships did not go as hoped, as the Miners were defeated in the semifinals by McKendree at Paradise Pointe Golf Course.
The Bearcats won three of the five head-to-head matchup in the matchup to S&T's one, with the fifth matchup ending in a tie. McKendree would go on to win the GLVC championship and automatic bid the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional by later beating top-seeded Missouri-St. Louis in a tiebreaker.
The lone Miner win on Tuesday came from freshman
Isaac Chern Yi To (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia/Real International School), who finished two shots ahead of Phasin Vichitcharoenpaisarn.
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field), the GLVC medalist who posted the lowest score in conference history over the two previous days, ended up tied with Rasmus Nilsson as both players shot a 73 in their round.
S&T's other three competitors all came up on the short end of their individual results, as
Gustav Liljedahl (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) lost by three shots to Thomas Tollefsen and
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) and
Joe Friedel (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) both lost their matches by six shots.
Missouri S&T, currently ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II Midwest region, will await the regional selections that will be announced on Friday, April 28. If the Miners are selected, they will open play in the Midwest/Central Regional on March 11 in Winona, Minn.
