Clancy claims consolation title in 100-breaststroke at NCAA-II Championships

3/10/2023 8:40:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The third full day of the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships was a record-setting one for Missouri S&T's Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton), as he set a new school record in the process of winning the consolation final of the 100-yard breaststroke in one of his two scoring performances of the night.

Clancy shattered the record in the event with a time of 52.84 seconds – a time that would be better than that of all but two of the competitors in the championship finals – and won the race by nearly a second.  He followed that performance with a 13th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, where he finished with a time of 47.97 seconds.

The two scoring performances for Clancy on Friday, which were the only ones for S&T on the day, gives him three All-America awards at the national meet as he was also part of S&T's 400-yard medley relay team that finished among the top 16.

In the morning preliminaries, Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) had a time of 48.58 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke, while Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) posted a time of 1:49.45 and Connor Bichsel (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) had a time of 1:50.99 in the 200-yard butterfly.

Through the third full day of competition, the Miners remain in 16th place in the standings with 44 points as a team.  The meet is still led by three teams from the Great Lakes Valley Conference – Indianapolis, Drury and McKendree – with UIndy holding a 34.5 point lead over the Panthers.

The final day of the meet will see Wiedemeier compete in the 100-yard freestyle and lead off the 400-yard freestyle relay team that will include Clancy, Baxter and Walters.  Clancy and Walters will also compete in the 200-yard backstroke, while Bichsel and Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) are slated to race in the 200-yard breaststroke.
