WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Missouri S&T's
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) finished in a tie for second place and the Miners as a team finished second overall at the Perkins Intercollegiate that wrapped up Tuesday afternoon at Prairie West Golf Club.
Miltun finished in the tie for the second spot after recording his third round below par in the event, shooting a 69 to finish with a six-under final total of 207. Miltun posted four birdies in the final round among the 13 he had in the tournament. He was one of three S&T players to finish among the top 10 overall, as
Carter Schmitt (Baton Rouge, LA/Catholic) – playing as an individual – finished sixth with a three-under 210 after posting a 68 Tuesday and
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) tied for eighth at 212.
Nicolas Estrada (Zaragoza, Spain/IES Valdespartera), who led all players in the tournament with five eagles, had two more on Tuesday as he eagled the sixth and 11
th holes – two holes that he had eagled during the first two rounds on Monday. Estrada ended up in a tie for for 11
th with a score of 213, the same mark posted by
Isaac To (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia/Real International School) and one shot ahead of
Cole Komyati (Elberta, AL/Bayside Academy), who finished with a 69 and a final score of 214.
Connor Benjamin (Nelson Bay, Australia/St. Philip's Christian College) finished with a score of 221 and
Joey Friedel (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt South), playing as an individual along witih Schmitt and Komyati, finished at 228.
S&T hung around the top of the leaderboard for a majority of the afternoon on Tuesday, but some struggles on the late holes and slipped behind Southwestern Oklahoma State in the standings. Despite having 10 eagles in the tournament, the Miners had five bogeys and a double bogeys over the final two holes and dropped to 11-under par for the tournament to put them a shot in back of the Bulldogs.
Southwestern Oklahoma State's Max Bialy captured medalist honors with an 11-under-par score of 202, while his teammate, Anders Strand, finished in the tie for second with Miltun.
The Miners' next competition is slated for Oct. 16 and 17 at the Findlay Invitational in Findlay, Ohio.
