BOLIVAR, Mo. – Missouri S&T's
Emma Puetz (Rolla, MO/Rolla) continued her outstanding cross country season Saturday with another record performance, finishing in second place to help Missouri S&T's women's cross country team place seventh at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships at Bolivar, Mo.
Puetz finished second in the six-kilometer race – the highest finish for a Miner at the GLVC Championships and highest at a conference meet since 2003 – as she covered the course in 21:45. She was among a tight pack of runners for the first two kilometers of the race before breaking away along with eventual race winner Hannah Smrcka of Lewis by the four-kilometer mark.
Smrcka won the race in 21:13, while Puetz finished three seconds in front of Drury's Luz Olivera to claim the second place spot.
The time of 21:45 over six kilometers beat the previous best of 21:51 posted by Kate Hamera at the NCAA South Central Regional in 2003, the same season where she took second at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships.
Grace Giesler (Owasso, OK/Owasso) was the second Miner to cross the finish line in 35
th place in a time of 23:57, while
Clare Holmes (Camdenton, MO/Camdenton) finished 40
th in 24:10 and
Victoria Regitz (Rockville, MD/Rockville) was right behind her with a time of 24:11. S&T's fifth finisher was
Grace Johnson (Rogersville, MO/Logan-Rogersville) in 73
rd place in 26:34, while the next two spots went to
Kelly Zipfel (St. Louis, MO/Ursuline Academy) in 27:05 and
Allison Rush (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) in 28:17 in the race of 123 runners.
S&T finished with 191 points in the meet, which was won by Lewis with a score of 28 points. The Flyers finished well ahead of Drury and Southwest Baptist for the top spot.
The Miners will compete at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional in Evansville, Ind., on Nov. 4.
