ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team has a light week ahead of it in terms of having just one game on the schedule, but that contest will come against a nationally-ranked team from the Great Lakes Valley Conference as the Miners will host 23
rd-ranked Maryville Sunday in a 2:30 p.m. matchup.
The Saints are currently tied with McKendree for fourth place in the GLVC standings with 18 points, while the Miners are trying to run down the teams at the end of the playoff chain to make an appearance for the second year in succession. S&T is three points behind Quincy, who holds the eighth place spot with two weekends of action remaining.
The Miners picked up one of their best results of the season last week when they played eighth-ranked Indianapolis to a scoreless tie, but lost a heartbreaker Sunday when Lewis scored in the 89
th minute to beat the Miners 3-2 to leave them with a 3-8-3 overall record and 2-6-2 mark in GLVC play.
Nathan Weyrauch (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) and
Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) scored for the Miners in the loss, while
Mike Banasik (Loekkegade, Denmark/Hjoering Gymnasium) continues to lead the Miners in the scoring column with five goals which ranks in a tie for second in the GLVC.
Santiago Cervantes (Collierville, TN/Collierville) has scored twice and
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) has four assists to rank second in the points column with four apiece.
Goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has a 1.81 goals against average and has made 44 saves in 1,141 minutes of playing time.
ABOUT MARYVILLE: The Saints, who were ranked 21
st a week ago, lost to Lewis and also played to a scoreless tie at UIndy to give them marks of 8-2-4 and 5-2-3 in the GLVC as the week begins. The loss to Lewis snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak for Maryville.
The Saints rank third in the GLVC in goals with 24, led by Mason Crew and Kelvin Milinya with four apiece and Tim Smith with three. Smith also has six assists – second-most in the conference – for a team-leading 12 points for a squad that has had 11 players score goals this season. Nick Hemann has seen the bulk of the action in goal and has a 0.75 goals against average.
The last time the teams met up was in the first round of last year's GLVC Tournament, which saw Maryville win in a penalty kick shootout after S&T led for most of the afternoon.
