ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team was able to hold off Lewis for much of the second half, but a goal in the 89
th minute sent the Miners to a tough 3-2 defeat Sunday afternoon.
The Flyers (7-2-3, 7-1-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference) got a goal from Charles Carlback to break a 2-2 tie and give Lewis the victory in a game played in windy conditions – which the Flyers had at their backs during the second half.
S&T's defensive unit and goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) did everything it could to hold the Flyers off the scoreboard over the final 45 minutes, as it was consistently under siege with Lewis holding an 11-1 advantage in shots during the half. Joseph made two brilliant saves during the second half, the first on a point blank shot by Artus Gorodnickis in the 75
th minute and the other on a free kick by Joram Bogers that he leaped to his right to turn away.
But with about 90 seconds remaining, the Flyers played a ball from the end line that was headed into the air by a Miner and went across the box to Carlback, who hit a left-footed shot into the upper right corner for the go-ahead goal.
The Flyers grabbed the lead in the fourth minute on a goal by Marco Holzer, then increased it to 2-0 when Bogers got free after a long pass and got a shot just inside the far post in the 25
th minute.
However, S&T (3-8-3, 2-6-2 GLVC) evened up the score before the half ended, getting on the scoreboard in the 33
rd minute when
Nathan Weyrauch (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) got a rebound in front of the net and hitting it into the open space past goalkeeper Sebastian Doppelhofer. Nearly five minutes later, the Miners drew even when
Derek Schlenker's (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) feed into the box was headed in by
Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central).
Lewis outshot the Miners 17-4 in the game, with Joseph finishing with four saves. The Miners are still in contention for a spot in the GLVC Tournament with three games left on their schedule, as they sit in a tie for ninth place but are only a point in back of eighth place Drury and two in back of seventh place Upper Iowa.
Missouri S&T will return home for those three remaining regular season games, the first of which will be next Sunday when it hosts Maryville at 2:30 p.m.
