ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Missouri S&T women's basketball continued Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 72-59 defeat at Lewis Saturday afternoon as the Miners (9-7, 5-3 GLVC) were hampered by a cold shooting second quarter.
 
For the first three minutes of this decision, S&T (9-7, 5-3 GLVC) trailed by two when 
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) started a 6-0 run on a layup.  After Lewis tied the contest back up, 
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) started a 5-0 run with a three-point basket that followed by an 
Anna Finley (Owensville, MO/Owensville) jumper to increase the S&T lead to five. The Miners led 15-13 at the close of the opening quarter, but Lewis took control of the contest in the second period as the Miners went cold from the floor. 
 
With just under a minute gone in the period, Kathryn Schmidt was able to give the Flyers the lead with a three-pointer that was part of a 12-0 Lewis run, which was eventually snapped on a layup by 
Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) to cut the deficit to six. But on the next Lewis possession, the Flyers began another run of 9-0 run on a layup by Lindsay Harrison that gave Lewis a 32-17 lead by the 3:54 mark of the period. Lewis finished the period outsourcing the Miners 26-6 to take a 39-21 lead at the half. 
Lewis would eventually build its lead to as much as 26 early in the second half before the Miners cut it down to 17 by the end of the third quarter, then S&T made the score closer down the stretch as it connected on five-of-eight from three-point range in the fourth quarter.
 
The Miners were led in scoring by Kerr as she finished with 14 points while matching 
Anna Finley (Owensville, MO/Owensville) and 
Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) with a team-high six rebounds. 
Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) was the other double figure scorer for the Miners as she contributed 12 points on four-of-six shooting from behind the arc. As a team, S&T shot 45.5 percent from behind the arc while outscoring the Flyers bench 27-15.
 
The Flyers finished the contest with three players in double-figures led by Schmidt with 24 points. Jenna Badali added 13 points and eight rebounds and Taylor Gugliuzza contributed 12 points. As a team, Lewis outscored the Miners 28-16 on points in the paint while only giving up five turnovers. 
 
The Miners will conclude this three-game road trip Monday at Illinois Springfield with tipoff slated for noon.
