WINONA, Minn. – Missouri S&T had the only two players to shoot an under par round on Monday and those co-leaders of the tournament have helped the Miner golf team hold a share of the lead after the first round of action at the Watkins Invitational.
The Miners, who are tied with Bemidji State with a team score of a seven-over-par 295 after the first 18 holes of play, have the co-leaders in
Gustav Liljedahl (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) and
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) as both shot a 71 on the par-72 course Monday.
Liljedahl was steady throughout the day, shooting 15 pars and posting birdies on the ninth and 11
th holes during the afternoon, while Thybo had one of the five eagles shot over the course of the first day as he posted that mark on the par-five ninth hole.
S&T led all teams with 60 pars in the opening round and also had 10 birdies during the day as well.
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) finished the first round by shooting a 76, while Cole Kamyati finished with a 77 and Issac Chern Yi To posted a 78 in the first round.
Missouri S&T and Bemidji State, who has three players in the top 10 individually, are two shots in front of Concordia-St. Paul and four ahead of host Winona State.
The tournament will wrap up on Tuesday.
