QUINCY, Ill. – In a game delayed by a day due to travel issues for Missouri S&T's men's soccer team, the Miners fell behind early but came back and scored twice in the second half to earn a 3-3 tie against Quincy in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest on Monday night.
The Hawks (2-3-3, 0-2-1 GLVC) got on the scoreboard just 1:44 into the game on a goal by Kamou Harris, as he got a cross off the end line from George Ashby and slipped a shot to the inside post past S&T goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central). Quincy would extend its lead to 2-0 on Bobby Nikolopoulos' goal in the 29
th minute as he got a cross to the far post and redirected the shot into the net.
But the Miners (1-3-2, 0-1-2 GLVC) got one of the goals back right before halftime, as a throw-in was headed around twice inside the box before the third time was the charm; the third header made by
Afxentis Andreou (Paphos, Cyprus/Lykeo Agios Charalambous) went past goalkeeper with only 1:19 to play before halftime.
Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) and
Nathan Weyrauch (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit), who had the prior head balls on the play, were credited with assists.
Quincy regained its two-goal advantage in the 58
th minute after S&T's
Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) missed just wide of the far post, as the Miners were unable to get a ball cleared out their own end and the cross got through the defense and was poked in by Marcel Kaspar.
S&T had an answer over the next 13 minutes, first cutting to margin to one again on another goal on a head ball, as
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) redirected
Grant Polman's (Wentzville, MO/Holt) free kick in front of the net into the upper right corner to trim the lead to 3-2. Then in the 71
st minute, S&T had two shots blocked in front of the net before
Jacob Bandy (Bettendorf, IA/Pleasant Valley) hit the third past David Fitzgerald to knot the score.
The Hawks finished with a 20-9 advantage in shots in the game, as Joseph finished with five saves in net.
Missouri S&T continues its stretch on the road Friday when it takes on Rockhurst in a 7:30 p.m. contest in Kansas City, Mo.
