ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team got a tie in its conference opener away from home on Sunday and now comes home for its first Great Lakes Valley Conference match on the home pitch as it hosts Truman State Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The game with the Bulldogs is part of a split weekend for the Miners in GLVC play, as they will head to Quincy on Sunday to meet up with the Hawks in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
S&T opened its own GLVC slate by playing to a 1-1 tie Sunday at Illinois Springfield and will take a 1-2-1 overall record into Friday's action. The Miners' only goal against UIS was an own goal, as the Prairie Stars tried to clear a ball back to their goalkeeper and the ball went past him and into the goal
The Miners have scored three goals thus far on the season, getting one apiece from
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole),
Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) and Pablo Lopez.
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has seen the bulk of the action as the S&T netminder with a goals against average of 1.64 and 18 saves in 329-plus minutes of play. Joseph stopped a penalty kick by UIS in the second half Saturday that would have given the Prairie Stars the lead and was able to help preserve the tie.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Truman State opened its GLVC season by winning a high scoring affair over Southwest Baptist, beating the Bearcats 5-3 to improve to 2-1-1 on the year. The Bulldogs got three goals from Mac Knudsen, who earned the GLVC's Offensive Player of the Week award for his efforts, while also getting tallies from Luke Payne and Sam Newton.
Knudsen has four goals on the year to lead Truman, while Payne has scored twice and has added three assists – all of which came in Sunday's win. Goalkeeper Justin Olwig has recorded a 1.50 goals against average through four games with eight saves.
Quincy began its GLVC slate by dropping a 3-0 decision at home to Drury, falling to 2-2-2 overall in the process. The loss came after the Hawks had recorded their first two wins of the year, which were one-goal victories over Upper Iowa and Newman.
Macker Little is the only Hawk with more than one goal as he has scored twice this season; six other Hawks have tallied goals this year. One of the six, George Ashby, leads Quincy with three assists. David Fitzgerald has played all six games in the nets and has a 1.67 goals against average with 20 saves.
