Baseball Plays to Saturday Split with Lewis

ROLLA, Mo. – It was another clear and windy day at the Ballpark at S&T Saturday for the second and third games of the weekend between Missouri S&T and Lewis. With winds gusting close tor 30 miles per hour all afternoon, the Miners (14-10, 3-4) were able to take a 3-2 decision in the day's opener before falling the Flyers (8-11-1, 4-3) in the nightcap 9-3.

S&T wasted little time in the first inning of game one getting on the board, scoring the balance of their runs for the game in the opening frame. A two out double in the left field corner by Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) got the rally going before Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) triples to deep centerfield to plate Wood for the day's first run. Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) stepped in next and promptly stepped out, blasting his fourth home run of the season onto the pavement of Highway 63 to make it a 3-0 game.

Lewis answered with lone runs in both the second and third innings, taking advantage of the windy conditions as they left the yard twice to make it 3-2.

Starter Cade Meier (Dakota, IL/Dakota) (3-1) buckled down after allowing the second home run, retiring seven in a row at one point before allowing a leadoff single in the sixth. Elijah Gross (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) came on to work the seventh and struck out a pair as he recorded his second save of the season.

Weiner and Wood both finished 2-3 in the opener with an extra base hit and run scored while Voss had the big blow of the game with his two-run blast.

In game two, it was Lewis who scored first and led 2-0 after three innings of play. After a 1-2-3 top of the fourth, S&T posted three runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead. A leadoff walk and stolen base by Weiner preceded an RBI double by Voss. After Braden Mahurin (Dixon, MO/Dixon) worked a walk and a double steal put men at second and third, Andrew Branson (St. James, MO/St. James) tied things with a sacrifice fly to center. Two batters later, a wind blown double off the bat of Tate Morrell (Lloydminster, AB/) made it a 3-2 game as Mahurin scored on the play from second.

Lewis tied things with an RBI double in the fifth with one out and took the lead back for good in the sixth, scoring six times and taking advantage of three S&T errors in the inning to make it 9-3 as they went on to take game two and split the doubleheader.

Starter Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) took a no decision, working 4 1/3 innings and striking out three while allowing three runs on five hits. Chasen Anderson (Moscow Mills, MO/Troy Buchanan) (0-1), the first of four relievers used in the game by S&T, was tagged with the loss, working 2/3 of an inning and be tagged for three unearned runs. Mick Von Feldt (St. Charles, IA/Interstate 35), the final reliever used in the game by S&T, worked a 1-2-3 seventh and recorded a strikeout a to end the inning.

Six different Miners recorded a hit in the game, including Tommy Ruether (Washington, MO/Washington) and Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain). Voss, Morrell and Branson were responsible for driving in S&T's three runs in the contest.

The series will conclude Sunday with a single nine-inning contest at 12 P.M.
