ROLLA, Mo. – It was the final game of a 14-game homestand for the Missouri S&T baseball Sunday as they closed out their second Great Lakes Valley Conference series of the season opposite of Lewis at the Ballpark at S&T. The Flyers (9-11-1, 5-3) scored first and never looked back, scoring in five of seven innings as the Miners (14-11, 3-5) never found their rhythm at the plate in a game that ended 22-3.
Four runs in the first gave Lewis an early lead but starter
Nate Wodka (Allen, TX/Allen) kept the Flyers in check in the second and third innings, retiring six out of seven batters in that stretch.
S&T scored their first run of the day when
Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) crossed home on an error by the second baseman off the bat of
Tommy Ruether (Washington, MO/Washington) to make it 4-1.
Lewis then proceeded to score seven runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, seven again in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make it 22-1.
The Miners plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single with one out by
Chase Burgess (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) that saw
Cole Hampton (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and
Christian Montes de Oca (El Paso, TX/Franklin) score after they both reached base to begin the inning. Burgess stole second but was left stranded as the next two batters were retired as the game was called after seven innings on account of the 10-run rule.
Burgess recorded two of S&T's six hits in the game while Weiner and Montes de Oca both recorded doubles in the game.
Jaden Courtois (Festus, MO/Jefferson) also recorded a hit, delivering a pinch hit single in the sixth.
Wodka (1-2) took the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs, four earned, in his 3 1/3 innings of work with three strikeouts.
Dylan Dunbar (West Plains, MO/West Plains),
David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest),
Mick Von Feldt (St. Charles, IA/Interstate 35) and
Kyle Fowler (Foristell, MO/St. Dominic) all saw action in relief over the course of the afternoon.
The Miners will hit the road for nine of their next 10 games, beginning Tuesday with a trip to Missouri Southern with first pitch set for 5 P.M.
