ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T struggled to slow down Missouri-St. Louis' offensive attack Sunday afternoon as the Tritons swept the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at the S&T Softball Field by scores of 12-4 and 11-0.
Game 1: Missouri-St. Louis 12, Miners 4
The Tritons (26-13, 15-5 GLVC) sent 13 batters to the plate in the opening inning and scored seven times to take control of the contest. UMSL had just three hits in the inning, but benefitted from two S&T errors and four walks over the course of the frame.
UMSL didn't score again until the fourth when it put two runs on the board and then added a run in the fifth before the Miners (20-20, 8-10 GLVC) plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning to keep the game going.
Emma Vaughn (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum) led off the inning with a hit, then
Chloe Saltijeral (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) reached on an error and
Baylee Jobson (Marceline, Mo./Marceline RV) drew a walk to load the bases.
With one out,
Hannah Antzoulatos (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) singled up the middle to bring home the first run; a throwing error on the play allowed pinch-runner
Madi O'Farrell (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) to score as well.
Madison Passolano (Mokena, Ill./Lockport Township) followed with an opposite field single that scored Jobson with the third run of the inning.
However, the Tritons got a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth from Megan Brown to extend their lead to 12-3 and won the game on the mercy rule even after the Miners scored in the bottom of the sixth, as a dropped pop fly allowed
Ashley Davis (Erie, Ill./Erie) to cross the plate.
UMSL outhit S&T 14-7 in the opener; Passolano had three of the Miners' seven hits. Starting pitcher
Julia Kanoy (Hamilton, Mo./Penney) took the loss in the circle.
Game 2: Missouri-St. Louis 11, Miners 0
After three scoreless innings, the Tritons broke loose with a three-run fourth inning and then scored eight times in the fifth as 14 batters came to the plate in the top half of the fifth.
Riley Schultz broke the scoreless tie when she lofted a two-run homer off S&T starter
Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) with one out in the fourth, then UMSL added another run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Brown. Schultz also kickstarted the Tritons' big fifth inning with a double that the first two of the eight runs.
The Miners were held to just two hits in the nightcap by UMSL's Annie Scaramuzzi, a double in the second by Vaughn and a single by Antzoulatos in the third. UMSL had 12 hits in game two.
Missouri S&T will return to action on Saturday when it takes on Quincy in a doubleheader that will begin at 1 p.m. in Quincy, Ill.
