QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T used a seventh inning rally to force extra innings in the first game of its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Quincy, then pulled out a 5-3 win in 11 innings before having to settle for a split as the Hawks took a 7-1 decision in the nightcap. The Miners came out of the day at 21-21 overall, but were able to draw even in the GLVC standings with Maryville and Rockhurst as all three are now 9-11 in conference play with eight games remaining.
Game 1: Missouri S&T 5, Quincy 3 (11 innings)
Trailing 3-2 entering the seventh inning,
Hannah Antzoulatos (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) – entering the game as a pinch-hitter – hit her league-leading fifth triple of the season to open the frame before
Madison Passolano (Mokena, Ill./Lockport Township) singled off the glove of the third baseman to bring her home to knot the score. S&T had two runners on base with one out, but a double play got the Hawks out of the inning.
Quincy (12-25, 6-14 GLVC) threatened to win the game when it had a runner at second with two outs in the ninth, but S&T starter
Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) got Bailey Mitchell on a ball back to the circle to squelch the threat.
In the 11
th,
Emma Vaughn (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum) led off with a double into right center and moved over to third on a hit by
Chloe Saltijeral (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary).
Taylor Caton (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Vaughn with the go-ahead run, then S&T added another run before the inning ended when
Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) reached on an error with two outs to bring in pinch-runner
Peyton Dillon (Yorkville, Ill./Rosary).
Wooldridge retired the Hawks in order in the bottom half to pick up her 11
th win of the season; she scattered eight hits in the contest and recorded seven strikeouts.
Quincy had taken the initial lead in the game with a run in the first, but the Miners got two in their half of the second starting Wooldridge was hit by a pitch to open the frame. She moved around to third on a ground ball and an error, then scored on a ground ball off the bat of Caton. S&T took the lead when Salitjeral scored on an opposite field single by
Ciarrah Bell (Marceline, Mo./Marceline).
Bell had three hits for the Miners in the opener as they outhit the Hawks 14-8.
Game 2: Quincy 7, Missouri S&T 1
Unfortunately for the Miners, the momentum from game one didn't carry over to the nightcap as the Hawks jumped the Miners early in the contest by taking a 7-0 lead after three innings. Quincy took the lead in the second inning on a two-run double off the bat of Mykah Hurley, then an RBI single by Bailey Mitchell and a bases loaded walk completed a four-run inning. Allyson Maynard doubled in two runs in a three-run third for Quincy.
S&T got on the scoreboard in the sixth as it got three straight hits with one out to load the bases before pinch-runner
Madi O'Farrell (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) scored on a fielder's choice.
The Miners were outhit 12-9 in the second game;
Shannon Flowers (Katy, Texas/Katy) had three of the Miners' nine hits.
Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) took the loss in the circle for S&T.
Missouri S&T will be idle until next Saturday when it continues its road trip with a doubleheader against fifth-ranked Indianapolis. First pitch is scheduled for noon Eastern time.
