Golf Opens Spring Season with First Round at Las Vegas Desert Classic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Back on the course for the first time in an event in the new calendar year, the Missouri S&T golf team competed in the first round of the Las Vegas Desert Classic hosted by Missouri-St. Louis Sunday at Legacy Golf Club. In a very deep and very competitive 19-team field that includes 11 Top-50 teams, the Miners posted a day one score of 299 and currently sit 14th overall heading into round two.
 
Colin Stolze (St. Louis, MO/Chaminade College Preparatory) was near the top of the leaderboard all round long and was T1 at one point, but finished the round with a 70 that included four birdies and 13 holes at par and closed the day T8
 
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) recorded a trio of birdies and 10 holes of par golf to fire a 74 to begin his event and sits T39 after one round.
 
Fatt Hoe Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/SMK Seri Bintang Utara) rebounded from a slow start to record a pair of birdies to work an opening round 77 and is T66 on the board.
 
Gustav Liljedahl (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) birdied two of three to start the day and finished the round with nine holes at par to shoot a +6 78 and sits T78.
 
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) rounded out the S&T contingent, recording three birdies, including back-to-back on 17 and 18 as he carded an 80 to open the week and is T85 heading into Tuesday.
 
Leading the field is UMSL with a -6 282, followed by Central Missouri just one stroke behind at 283. St. Mary's (TX) and West Florida are tied for third with a -3 285 while Colorado Mesa rounds out the top five with a -2 286.
 
Second round action will get underway Monday morning at 8 A.M. PT with a shotgun start.
