ROLLA, Mo. – After getting the first career goals from two players to take the lead in the first half, the reigning player of the week in the Great Lakes Valley Conference helped finish off Missouri S&T's 4-1 win over Missouri-St. Louis Friday night at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Robert Suellentrop (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit) and
Santiago Cervantes (Collierville, TN/Collierville) – neither of whom had scored a goal at the collegiate level – both found the net in the first 15 minutes of the contest before
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) scored twice in a span of 3:19 after the Tritons had cut the S&T lead in half to salt away the Miners' second win in GLVC play.
Sullentrop scored in the sixth minute when he headed in
Jimmy Sanchez's (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) corner kick to put S&T into the lead. Just over eight minutes later, Jorgensen had a shot stopped by UMSL goalkeeper Austin Reis, but went right to Cervantes and he buried his shot into the back of the net to double the Miner advantage.
The score remained 2-0 until the 56
th minute, when a giveaway by the Miners (3-4-4, 2-2-4 GLVC) on their own end allowed Arman Kovac to score on a shot from the wing to bring the Tritons (4-6-2, 3-4-1 GLVC) back to within a goal. UMSL then had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the 66
th minute, but Miner goalie
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) came out the net and stopped JT Goldstein about 15 yards from the goal.
S&T regained its two-goal lead in the 80
th minute when a passing sequence from
Mustafa Hasan (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) to
Derek Schlenker (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) led to a pass in front to Jorgensen to tally his fourth goal of the season. Then just over three minutes later, Jorgensen scored his second goal on a direct free kick from outside the box.
The Tritons held a 14-13 advantage in shots in the contest, but Joseph turned away four of the five attempts that were on net.
Missouri S&T will return to action Monday with a non-conference game against Union in Jackson, Tenn., starting at 3 p.m.
