JACKSON, Tenn. – Stepping outside the Great Lakes Valley Conference for a rare Monday contest, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team allowed two goals late in the first half that propelled Union to a 4-2 win over the Miners.
The Miners (3-5-4) scored first in Monday's contest, as
Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) scored in the fifth minute of play off an assist from
Santiago Cervantes (Collierville, TN/Collierville). However, the Bulldogs (4-8-1) evened up the game just over three minutes later on a goal by Mats Fredriksen, then took the lead with two goals in the final 10:10 of the opening half.
Billy Grogan put Union in front when he scored in the 35
th minute, then Ostian Bowen added a goal in the 41
st minute to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead as the first half ended.
Union extended its lead in the 54
th minute when Fredriksen scored for the second time before
Jacob Lee (Atlanta, GA/Dunwoody) scored his first career goal for the Miners with just four minutes remaining.
The Miners had several good scoring chances in the second half, including one sequence where Union goalkeeper Botond Nemeth made three saves in a span of 11 seconds before a fourth Miner attempt when over the crossbar. The Miners also hit the goal post on a shot in the second half.
Missouri S&T outshot Union 18-14 in the game and had 10 shots on goal to Union's nine.
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) played the first 64-plus minutes in goal and made four saves, while
Luke Mirly (Jackson, MO/Jackson) had one after entering the game in the 65
th minute.
The Miners, who are currently in eighth place in the GLVC, will return to conference play Friday when they take on McKendree at 7:30 p.m. in Lebanon, Ill.
