ROLLA, Mo. – With the homestretch of the Great Lakes Valley Conference on the horizon, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will look to climb back into the playoff mix when it wraps up a three-game homestand Friday against Missouri-St. Louis.
The Miners will host the Tritons in a 7:30 p.m. game at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, then S&T will play again on Monday as it will take on Union University in Jackson, Tenn., in a non-conference match starting at 3 p.m.
The first order of business, however, is Friday's game as the Miners currently find themselves two points out of a playoff spot in the GLVC with just five conference games remaining. S&T comes into the UMSL contest at 1-2-4 for seven points in the GLVC while sporting a 2-4-4 overall mark.
S&T got its first conference win last Friday when it blanked Southwest Baptist 1-0 on a goal by
Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central), then played to a 3-3 draw with Drury Sunday.
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria), the GLVC's offensive player of the week, had a hand in all four goals the Miners scored in those two games, assisting on the Sanchez goal Friday, then scoring twice and adding an assist on Sunday.
Jorgensen became the first Miner since 2019 to score twice in a game and leads the Miners with nine points on the year, while
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole), the beneficiary of Jorgensen's assist on Sunday, has a team-high four goals. Sanchez is tied for the team lead in assists with Jorgensen with three.
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) got the shutout in goal on Friday and enters the weekend with a 1.86 goals against average in 869 minutes of action. He has been credited with 35 saves this season.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Missouri-St. Louis snapped a four-game winless streak with a 3-1 win over Southwest Baptist, getting goals from Gabe Stanislawski, Tommy Naumann and Jack Meuse to improve to 4-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in GLVC play for 10 points.
The Tritons are one of the highest scoring teams in the GLVC as they have scored 18 goals, led by Leo Sowa's five that ranks in a tie for third in the GLVC; his 14 total points are the second-most in the conference. Arman Kovac has scored four times and Meuse has hit the net three times on the year. Goalkeeper Austin Reis has 44 saves and a 1.30 goals against average in 970 minutes of action.
Union, a member of the Gulf South Conference, is 3-8-1 on the season but has won just once since opening the year with back-to-back victories. The Bulldogs have scored 10 of their 16 goals this season in their three wins, six of which have come off the foot of Ostian Bowen.
Stan DeVries has scored four times for Union, while goalkeeper Botond Nemeth has a 2.26 goals against average and 54 saves in 795 minutes.
