ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T had a trio of sub-70 rounds on Monday as it won both of its head-to-head matches to open the Mid-Missouri Medal Match Play tournament at Oak Meadow Country Club.
The Miners won four of the five pairings in their first match of the day to beat Quincy, then won three of the five in the afternoon session to edge Lewis. Missouri S&T will face Maryville – who also won both of their matches Monday – in the final session on Tuesday morning.
In the Quincy match,
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) shot a four-under-par 66 to win his match over Patrick Ringwald and also had the lowest overall score of the day of 138.
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) shot a 69 in winning his match in the morning, while
Gustav Liljedahl (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) had a 73 to win his matchup by nine shots and
Thomas Heisner (Crestwood, MO/Lindbergh) had a five-shot win over Ryan Kruse.
Liljedahl and Thybo also won their afternoon matches when the Miners were up against Lewis, as Liljedahl posted a 68 to edge Ty Doty by one shot. Thybo shot a 75 but won by 12 strokes in his matchup, while Komyati posted a 77 to win by six shots. Despite shooting a second-round 72, Miltun fell by two shots to Jake Pluth.
Miltun holds the overall lead by two shots over Maryville's Brad Karpick, while Liljedahl sits in fourth individually with a 142 and Thybo is tied for sixth at 144. Heisner ended the day at 150 and Komyati finished with a two-round score of 153.
