ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T grabbed a second half lead against Drury Sunday afternoon at the S&T Soccer Field, but the Panthers got a goal in the final 10 minutes that forced the teams to play to a 3-3 tie in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Sunday's game was a wild back-and-forth affair that saw four goals scored in the first 26 minutes of play, beginning with Jamie O'Brien's tally in the 10
th minute as he got a feed in front and hit it by S&T goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) to give Drury (4-1-5, 2-0-4 GLVC) the early lead.
S&T (2-4-4, 1-2-4 GLVC) answered back with a pair of
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) goals less than two minutes apart that gave the Miners the lead. The first came after S&T got a corner kick chance where
Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) had a head ball stopped by Drury goalkeeper Tyler Frolik, only for the rebound to fall at the feet of Jorgensen who proceeded to whack into the back of the net.
A couple of minutes later following a throw-in, Sanchez had another shot that was stopped but again, the rebound rolled out to Jorgensen and he buried the shot to put the Miners into the lead.
Drury tied the score two minutes following Jorgensen's second goal after Kaelen Debbage got the ball after a giveaway by the Miners on the defensive end, as he broke in and lofted a shot into the upper left corner.
The Miners took the lead in the 74
th minute of play as Jorgensen found
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) in front and he redirected a ball by Frolik to give S&T a 3-2 lead. But the Panthers were able to tie the score in the 81
st minute as Joseph came to challenge a shot by J.J. Adikwu, but the ball stayed free and O'Brien got his second goal of the game before the S&T goalkeeper could get back to the net on the play.
After the Panthers tied the game, the two teams combined for just one shot – an attempt by O'Brien that was blocked by the Miner defense.
Missouri S&T had a 12-10 advantage in shots in the game, while each side had six shots on net. Joseph finished with three saves for the Miners.
With his two goals Sunday, Jorgensen became the first Miner since current teammate
Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) to score twice in game; Cairns' two-goal game came in the 2019 season against Drury.
The Miners will close out their three-game homestand by hosting Missouri-St. Louis Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
