ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team fell behind early Sunday afternoon and dropped a 7-1 decision to Great Lakes Valley Conference leader Maryville.
The Saints, ranked 22
nd in NCAA Division II by the United Soccer Coaches, scored three times within the first 15 minutes of play to seize control early in the contest. Tim Smith scored the first two goals, getting the Saints on the board in the fourth minute when he got a pass in front and redirected it past S&T goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central), then again in the ninth minute as he cut across the field near the top of the box and hit a low shot into the corner of the net.
Maryville (9-4-2, 8-1-2 GLVC) wasn't finished, however, as Bryce Glisson scored in the 15
th minute, Cameron Caldwell found the net in the 36
th minute and Eyob Tadesse scored in the 40
th minute to give Maryville a 5-0 lead it would take to halftime.
The Saints scored on five of the seven shots they took in the opening half and ended up outshooting S&T 14-2 in the contest.
Maryville would add a sixth goal – scored by Jimmy Doherty – before the Miners (4-6-4, 3-3-4 GLVC) broke the shutout in the 52
nd minute when
Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) took a long pass from
Derek Schlenker (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) and beat Maryville goalkeeper Nick Hemann with a shot from the top of the arc into the lower left corner. However, the Saints got on the board one more time as Sebastian Weitlaner scored in the 76
th minute.
The Miners will look to lock up a playoff spot at home next weekend as they will play in Rolla twice, beginning with Friday's 7:30 p.m. game against Lewis at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
