ROLLA, Mo. – A high scoring affair Friday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium went in favor of the visiting Lewis Flyers, as a goal in the 78
th minute proved to be decisive in the Flyers' 4-3 win over Missouri S&T's men's soccer team in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The loss Friday was a costly one for the Miners in their quest to make the GLVC Tournament, as they fell into a tie for eighth place with Truman State with one game remaining. S&T will likely need a win Sunday in its regular season finale against Indianapolis to have a chance to earn one of the top eight seeds for the tournament.
Lewis (9-3-2, 7-2-2 GLVC) got the first goal of the game in the 30
th minute from Joram Bogers, but
Caden Archer (St. Louis, MO/Vianney) helped the Miners (4-7-4, 3-4-4 GLVC) score twice in a span of under four minutes with a pair of long throw-ins that led to goals. The first came in the 32
nd minute when
Evan Birsinger (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood) got a head on a throw-in in front of the net to tie the game, then in the 36
th minute,
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) redirected a throw into the net to put S&T on top.
The Flyers tied the game with a penalty kick goal from Justin Darlage just over two minutes later and the contest remained tied until the 66
th minute, when Seth Dilworth sent a long diagonal pass into the box that left Godwin Asore one-on-one with S&T goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) and his shot to the near post put the Flyers in the lead.
Mikey Revell's long-range goal in the 78
th minute with the wind at his back gave Lewis a two-goal lead, but S&T quickly cut that in half when Flyer goalkeeper Sebastian Doppelhofer stopped
Mustafa Hasan's (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) initial shot in front before
Robert Suellentrop (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit) pounced on the rebound and scored to make it 4-3.
The Miners had four shots in the final minutes after Suellentrop's goal, but none of them reached Doppelhofer.
Lewis outshot S&T 16-15 in the game, while the teams were even in shots on goal with seven apiece. Joseph finished with three saves for S&T, who will face UIndy at 2:30 at the S&T Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
