ROLLA, Mo. – Currently sitting in the eighth spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer standings with just four games remaining on the regular season schedule, Missouri S&T heads to the road for two games this week including one against a team ranked in the top 25 nationally.
The Miners, 3-5-4 overall and 2-2-4 in the GLVC for 10 points, will head to Lebanon, Ill., for a matchup Friday against McKendree at 7:30 p.m., then will play on the Missouri side of the river Sunday when they face 22
nd-ranked Maryville, the current leader in the GLVC, at 2:30 p.m.
S&T picked up a big conference win last Friday when it beat Missouri-St. Louis 4-1 to move into the eighth spot in the standings and remained there following the conference action on Sunday as the Miners were idle. S&T dropped a non-conference game Monday at Union by a count of 4-2.
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) scored two more goals for the Miners on Friday and continues to lead S&T with five goals and four assists for 14 points; he is now third in the GLVC in points, tied for fourth in goals and tied for fifth in assists with his recent offensive outburst.
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole), meanwhile, is tied for 10
th in goals and
Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central), who scored the first goal Monday for the Miners, is tied with Jorgensen and UMSL's Leo Sowa for fifth in the GLVC in assists.
In 1,023 minutes of playing time this season,
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has a 2.02 goals against average and has been credited with 43 saves.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: McKendree had its six-game unbeaten streak snapped on Sunday in a 2-0 loss to Rockhurst, dropping the Bearcats to 5-3-4 overall and 3-2-3 in the GLVC. Stephan Stuebbe has paced the Bearcats on the offensive side of things with six goals on the year, which is tied for the second-most in the conference.
Phillipp Schmidt is tied for the GLVC lead with six assists, while Anthony Swenson has seen the bulk of the playing time in goal, where he has a 0.72 goals against average in 750 minutes of actions and has made 20 saves.
Maryville rebounded from a loss at Drury on Friday to beat Southwest Baptist 2-0 on Sunday; the loss dropped the Saints three spots in the national rankings this week. Maryville is 8-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the GLVC for a league-best 22 points heading into a Friday home contest against UMSL.
Cedric Sengl leads the Saints with four goals and five assists for 13 points, while Victor DeGiorgio leads Maryville with five goals and has added two assists. Albert Escuin is second in the GLVC in goals against average with a mark of 0.62 as the Saints have allowed just 10 goals in their 13 contests this season.
