ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T was unable to overcome a pair of big scoring runs by William Jewell Saturday afternoon at Gibson Arena, as the Cardinals came away with a 75-65 win over the Miners in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Cardinals took the lead for good in the game during the course of a 17-0 run in the first half, then used a 10-0 run in the second half to break the game open behind the three-point shooting of Jordan Jermain, who made seven-of-13 from beyond the arc on his way to a game-high 30 points.
The Miners (6-9, 2-6 GLVC) held the lead in the early stages of the contest and had a 11-0 of their own to take a 10-point lead. A basket in the lane by
Mahamadou Kaba-Camera (Conakry, Guinea/Balboa City (San Diego, CA)) put S&T in front and started the run that concluded with a backdoor layup by
Ryan Parker (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington South) to give the Miners a 15-5 lead by the 12:23 mark.
After a basket by
Saheem Anthony (Brooklyn, NY/Westinghouse) that answered Javaughn Ferguson's put-back that halted S&T's run, the Cardinals (9-6, 5-2 GLVC) started their 17-0 run on the first of Jermian's three-point baskets. Jermain hit another three to tie the game at 17 at the 9:45 mark, then Grant Stubbs drained a shot from beyond the arc to put the Cardinals in front 30 seconds later.
The Miners ended the Jewell run when
Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) hit a pair of free throws and his basket the next time down trimmed the Cardinal lead to three, but Jewell pushed the lead out to 10 by the 3:20 mark and eventually took a 36-29 lead to the locker room.
Jewell would extend the lead back to double figures early in the second half and after a basket by Jermain with 17:11 to go, would never lead by less than 10 for the rest of the afternoon as that basket triggered its 10-0 second half run to bust the contest open.
S&T had the lead down to 11 following a four-point play by
Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) with 9:12 remaining, but that was as close as it got until it got a basket from
Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) – who led the Miners with 16 points – in the final seconds to bring about the final 10-point margin.
Smith was the only other Miner in double figures with 14 points as S&T shot 42.6 percent of its field goal attempts on the afternoon. The Cardinals, meanwhile, were good on 47.5 percent of their shots and hit 11 three-pointers in the game.
Missouri S&T will head to the road Monday evening to take on Quincy in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
